Munny Monday: A Pirate’s Life For Me

This week’s Munny is an adorable pirate Mini Munny customized by loyal reader and member of the Awesome Boards, BROWN. Can you believe that this is actually his first ever custom? It’s based on a shirt design for his t-shirt company, B1Originals. He even went as far as to make the pirate hat himself out of drywall mud on a foam core!
And since Munny Monday is just as much about the artist as it is the Munny, hit the jump for an interview with the artist where we talk about Tokidoki, t-shirts, and graffiti. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comment section.

How’d you get into Munny Customizing?
I got into Munny customizing mainly through my brother, nervous, whose r2d2 Munny you recently featured. He’s my main inspiration. Also, this shop Red Hot Robot (in phoenix) came out of nowhere about a year and a half ago, and totally inspired us to get into the vinyl scene. I had a few toys before that, like a Seonna Hong Nut Hugger and a few others, but this made us take it to the next level for sure.
Is this piece for sale?
My current piece wasn’t really made with the intention of being sold, I just kinda wanted to prove to myself that I could do it, but of course, any serious offers WOULD be taken into consideration.
Do you do any commissioned stuff?
Yeah, I’d definitely do some commissioned work.
Do you collect any other designer toys? If so, what’s your favorite?
Yes, I am a collector. My favorite set was Moofia Minions, but to tell you the truth, the 3 new additions kinda’ pissed me off. It feels so good to finally get that last piece to your blind box collection, only to be slapped in the face a year or so later with these new characters. Why not just start another series? Anyway, I’m just venting. STILL, my favorite piece would have to be our 6″ Mozzarella, just because it was my wife and mine’s gift to ourselves after we got the last Minion in our original collection. It has some sentimental value, haha.
Other than that, I’m really digging Kathie Olivas’ Scavengers, and blank DIY Munnies are just so damn sexy.
How long have you been doing the T-Shirts thing?
I’ve been doing t-shirts since 2004. I just wanted to see my designs on tees. It makes shit seem so official.
Where’s the name “b 1 originals” come from?
The name b1 originals just kinda popped in my head, b1 because I was doing wheatpasting and stenciling under the name BROWN, or brown1, and originals, cos I thought it sounded dope, like some old denim brand or something.
The design of your site is very creative and totally gives off a
“graffiti” vibe. Have you ever taken part in any sort of artistic
form of vandalism? If
so, what was the best part about it?
Yeah, I’ve done quite a bit of wheatpasting since about ‘02, and a lot of stenciling too. Also, my older brothers were into graffiti for as long as I can remember. I guess the best part for me is how exciting it is to go on solo missions in the middle of the night. It’s a different world out there at 3am on a Sunday. And of course, seeing your work still up weeks later is also quite a treat.
Plan on doing any more customs?
Yeah, I had a few ideas for some customs even before I was done with this one! I have a feeling I’m gonna be doing this for a while.
