Best of E3 ‘09: Nintendo

bestofe3nintendofeature

Just because Nintendo had the least impressive keynote this E3 doesn’t mean that they didn’t have any impressive announcements. Sure, Microsoft may have 1up’d Nintendo’s waggle technology with their ultra-futuristic Project Natal, but Nintendo delivered a heap of announcements about some upcoming games that we just can’t wait to get out paws on. In case you missed it, here’s a wrap-up of the major announcements.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
This is the only time in Nintendo history that two 3d Mario games have been released on the same console. It’s also the first time that two back-to-back Mario platforming games have featured pretty much the same power-ups, level design, and gameplay mechanics. You’re still walking around on tiny little planets, but this time you can ride Yoshi! SMG2 runs on the same engine as its predecessor, but we’re hoping this is more than just a rehash.

The New Super Mario Bros. Wii
While the New Super Mario Bros. for the DS was a great game, it was missing some of the heart-and-soul felt in older 2D Mario games. Just like Super Mario Galaxy 2, this is giving off a bit too much of a “me too” vibe that seems out of character for Nintendo. I’m all for the announcements of new Mario games, but Mario games tend to be innovative, groundbreaking, and totally different from their predecessors (unless it’s one of those sports titles.) Hopefully this isn’t the same game as The New Super Mario Bros. for DS, just with 4 player support.

Golden Sun DS
Are you kidding me!? The original Golden Sun for the GBA is one of the most under appreciated RPGs of all time. Hopefully this DS version lets you battle your party against a friend’s just like the GBA version.

Metroid: Other M
Nintendo and Team Ninja working together on a Metroid game? Nerd heaven. A more mature, action-oriented Metroid is something that fans have wanted for a long time. Since Team Ninja is involved, don’t be surprised if Samus’s lady bits tend to jiggle in a distracting manner, these are the guys that did the Dead or Alive series, after all.

  • I'm replaying Metroid Prime atm, I'm so stoked after watching the Other M trailer. Also, I'm hanging out for more news on the new Wii Zelda game. The poster of Link without a sword I saw has my curiosity piqued.
