Lomography, Shoot from the Hip

So I’m on this huge Lomography kick right now. For as long as I can remember I’ve been wanting to get into photography — I even took a photography course while I was going to school for Visual Communications — but I just couldn’t wrap my head around all the camera settings and adjustments and lighting crap. I’d never even heard of Lomography before seeing this video, but I’m totally hooked. It reminds me of pictures in old surfing and skateboarding mags from the 70’s.

These are the 4 Lomography camera’s I’m currently torn between.

There’s this sexy Lomography Fisheye 35mm camera. It’s only $40 and I really like the way it looks. It kind of gives me a boner in a way.

Then there’s this cool Lomographic Supersampler Camera that comes with a box, film, and a book with some sample pictures for inspiration. This camera has 4 lenses and takes 4 sequential shots in one photo. It seems like a pretty good deal at only $45, but I’m no expert on these things.

This guy’s just badass. This is the Colorsplash and it gives each of your pictures a cool tint of a different color. If you just search for ‘colorsplash’ in Flickr, you’ll find some really gorgeous pictures. The only downside is this one’s $55.

Or I could just keep things simple and go with the Diana F+ Medium Format Camera. I’ve done some research and this seems to be the most popular Lomographic camera out there. It’s only $45 on Amazon, but I’d kinda like some goodies with it and the starter kit that comes with cool stuff is a whopping $85! Too rich for my blood. I’m working on blog wages here.

One thing that scares me about these cameras is the fact that they’re made pretty cheaply and some are shipped with defects aka they don’t advance film properly, they shred film, the inner lenses shift, the flashes stop working, etc.

Anybody have any experience with Lomography? I’d love to hear any advice, suggestions, or general thoughts!

  • Okay, so my girlfriend ordered me the Fisheye camera with next day shipping so I'll hopefully have it tomorrow. I'll try and get some kind of unboxing video up or something.
  • Lomography is awesome. They're all made of plastic, but that's what a lot of people like about them. Since sometimes they let light in, you can get cool looking light streaks where the film is partly exposed, vignetting around the borders, etc. There's a whole community based around these cheaply made cameras. Check out toycamera.com for some awesome stuff.

Personally, the Holga is one of my favorite cameras to use. They can be had for $30 or less ($15 or less on eBay). The only problem is that the film is medium format, and most film development places don't develop anything other than 35mm. But I think there is one in the Reading area somewhere. If not, there's ways you can modify it to accept 35mm film.

I might have to get one of these to add to my collection. I love taking photos with these types of cameras.
  • See, I had no clue about that medium format business so I'm glad you mentioned it. I found this adapter on amazon that let's it take 35mm film which is pretty cool.

It seems like these cameras have a buttload of accessories like different colored flashes and lenses, and split image filters and stuff. I'm so into this right now! I want one!!!
