James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Ripped from the Pages of a 1985 Marvel Comic

navimashup

Jame’s Cameron’s Avatar has been accused of ripping off everything from 1950’s sci-fi novels to album cover art, but this beats any other claim of ripoffery thus far.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present to you the 1985 Marvel comic Timespirits.

Fucked. Up.

Check out some more comparisons here.

With all the talk of Cameron ripping off other artists for this flick, I’m surprised I haven’t heard anything about a boycott. Anyone change their minds about going to watch Avatar after seeing this?

Get a brain. How many people do you think you're convincing? Read the comments. There's your answer.

Cool site and prefectly layout.Lots of informative text and updated content. However lack of videos and movies so called new media could turn down the score.Get sample here at http://www.watchnewmoviereleased.co.cc
  • Smurf Killer
What the hell is Fitz Rowr? Some one tell me?! Has anyone else noticed how most pissed of people like to compare this with smurfs? out of the 100's of different options, they choose smurfs. Anyone see and Na'vi wearing shoes or hats? It sucks that they won't have it in 3D when it's released on DVD. Have to see it in 3D while we all can!!!
  • randomchaos
Yeah, and George Lucas totally stole from every sci-fi comic book or novel made thus far. And don't get me started on The Beatles. And while we're at it, Jesus totally ripped off the Old Testament. Come on, now. Let's just enjoy the ride. "Every artist is a cannibal and every poet is a thief." I just stole that one from Bono, who has admitted he has stolen from other artists who themselves steal and put their own spin to it, etc etc.
  • Yo Face
Wackjobs. I found a list of 100's of blue women. Needless to say, does that mean it was all ripped off? Of course it does. Moron's the lot of you. Besides, so what if the movie is good or crap - it makes millions. MILLIONS.
  • I want to say that...
A mostly motion-capture movie featuring the Mother of all battles.
  • Ben LaBédaine
Not only that, but the flying copter thingies look a lot like the flying copter thingies in The Incredibles
(I wish I had a screenshot of the latter)

    that thieving SOB!
  • Interesting, I don't know, upon "first" inspection, the "Storyboards" or Framing is pretty SPOT-ON, people don't "Deny" that...It's pretty Suspect if you ask me...But then again, he's made a movie call'd AVATAR & not TIMESPIRITS, which is a story of his creation, even if the Framing and Some of the Imagery & Character VisuaLS are Similar, it's his story, his own creation, I don't know whether it's warranted, but perhaps he needs to give Credit where it's due, cuz the Inspiration is UNDENIABLE, that's a Pretty Spot On, Frame by Frame...Image to Image Similarity...Like a Blatant VisuaL Plagiarism...I don't know, but if WORDS were taken, verbatim, as your own, many would consider that "Stealing" but I'm thinking in this VisuaL Sense, he's "paraphrased" haha...With the SLIGHT Difference of Nine Feet TaLL Neytiri & Jake's AVATAR...Um, weLL...The Story is Different, and more Sci-Fi Oriented, though...This doesn't bode weLL, haha...It SO Looks the Same...Haha...I hope Mr. EGOTIST fesses up to doing SOME kinda VISUAL Plagiarism, cuz it LOOKS like he just LIFTED WHOLESALE certain images & Ideas...Way too CLOSE 4 Comfort, if u ask moi, but it's no biggie, One's a Comix no one "gives" a shizzz about, and the Other, a Multi-MiLLiONDoLLaR JUGGERNAUT of a Movie that costs a LOT in CGI Slugfest aLL Out War, Machine//Man Vs. Na'vi//Avatars...Words...So, Some Images are "borrowed" directly from this Comix...Least ya can do is "reference" the "Inspiration" Cameron...maybe that way, none of the NaySayers can Say SHIT...hah...

    wow. that was disappointing......

Like a few people have already said, there is nothing 100% original. Besides, so what if it was? No one gives a shit. The movie was effin awesome!
  • UXIEGIRL
damn that is just a lie i saw the REAL FULL MOVIE online and she didint do that! who ever made that i want to kick their lil assholes thats inperinating a movie almost

They are both female, have blue skin, and live in a jungle. Nothing has been "ripped off".

The comic book girl is just a naked human female form, with elf-like ears and blue skin.

The Avatars are somewhat feline looking... and should be easy to separate from a human.

If you were to ask the character designer if this comic was an inspritation, and it actually was, i'm sure he would have no problem telling you so.

I like the content of this site, but your commentary usually makes me cringe.
  • Holy crap. :O
  • maton
That blue chick in the comic is hot!
  • Yeah, there's nothing new under the sun and just about everything could be considered a ripoff in some form or another. I thought the comparison between Avatar and the album art was whack, but the 50's sci-fi novel and these comic pages are a bit too close for comfort.

Here's a quote from an io9.com article about the similiarties between Avatar and the book 'Call Me Joe'.

"Should the similarities between Avatar and Call Me Joe cause problems for Cameron, it wouldn't be the first time. After The Terminator came out, writer Harlan Ellison sued the production company for plagiarizing two episodes he wrote for The Outer Limits. Even though Cameron took Ellison's ideas in a very different and novel direction, the company settled with Ellison, who is now acknowledged in the film's credits."

Whether it's a blatant ripoff or just a teensy bit of inspiration, I believe in giving credit where credit is due. And who knows, in all likelihood, Cameron probably had nothing to do with the design. Some concept artist could have subliminally been inspired by some comic he read as a kid, but it can't be denied that the similarities between Avatar and Timespirits are pretty on-the-spot right down to the patterns on the cat chick's skin.

    Here is something for thought,

Leonardo Da Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton, both extremely intelligent men, these men of history both improved on Ideas/Inventions, Leo Da Vinci used alot of ideas from the Romans and improved on what they done, he also copied animals the human body the bird lets sue him for copying mother Earth. Sir Isaac N also improved on ideas and Inventions from History,

All the James Cameron has done is the same, improved on Poul Aderson "call me Joe" and the above Comic, combined theses to to make a great movie and for many people to enjoy the wonders of movie Technology

Lets see also what the Church says about the movie, the movie touches on the Pagan, Mother Earth, Universal powers, Celtic warriors etc.......

Looking at this movie it has all the above, one way to get a message across to all religions,

    Makes one think
  • bluerobsn
I all this "ripping" talk is bullshit. If you wanna analyze that, then go ahead and call out the vehicles, scenery, and everything else in the film that can be COMPARED to anything else that has come before it in science fiction..

Fuck... Knuckles from Sonic The Hedgehog lives on a floating island... guess Cameron ripped off Sega as well.

All the panels posted aren't even THAT simillar. How can you call out positions of the human body. Should the animators come up with a new way for the body to form when jumping from a cliff or tree?

The only real similarities is the fact the girl is blue... and she has semi cat ears. But that's universal shit. From night elves to the Ctarl-Ctarl from Outlaw Star (anime).

    Everything is recycled some what.
  • Agreed. A blue chick in a sci-fi story - how unusual! People need to get over it.
  • No way dude. He could rip off Lynch and Kubrick and I'd still go see Avatar. At least just out of curiosity.
