This Friday I plan on heading out to Metropolis in Lancaster, PA to check out the Suckadelic + Cupco show. Metropolis is the only place around that ever does anything cool pertaining to the art/toy scene. They’re actually where I bought my first full case of Dunnys. Unfortunately, this will be the last show that Metropolis hosts in Lancaster; they’ll be re-locating to Philly next year.
I’ll try and get some footage and pics from thet big shebang. If you see me, say hi.
Here’s all the info regarding the show from the Metropolis newsletter:
“Suckadelic & Cupco: New Works!” at Metropolis Gallery, December 4th through 31st
Debuting December 4th and running through the 31st, Metropolis Gallery is proud to be showcasing two of the most insanely notorious Pop Culture satirists on the globe. Both Suckadelic (aka The Sucklord) and Cupco have combined fine art, crafts, designer vinyl and even performance art to lampoon everything from Star Wars to Michael Jackson. Their attack on the nerd world of classic comics, D&D role playing games and Japanese sci-fi marries Mad Magazine’s irreverent parodies with Warhol’s “commerce-as-fine art” confrontations. Though both artists live on either side of the planet and work in different mediums, they arrive at the same place: Pop Art for the new millennium.

Suckadelic
Simultaneously a toy line, a sci-fi hip-hop group, a performance artist, and an all-around mad scientist, Suckadelic was first on the designer toy scene way back in 1998. Featured in publications as varied as Entertainment Weekly, Spin, Vice, Wired, and The New York Post, Suckadelic has also been championed by Kidrobot owner Paul Budnitz, interviewed on NPR: “All Things Considered,” and done installations for the legendary NYC store ALIFE. Possibly best known for creating the first ever homosexual action figure, Suckadelic has been embraced by the long-running Gay magazines Genre, Instinct and Homo Xtra. Most recently, Suckadelic was asked by Topps Cards to create a special Star Wars trading card series. Suckadelic will be here First Friday for the opening, so please stop by and say hello.Cupco is the design, animation, illustration and doll-making brainchild of Lucas Temby and his wife/muse Mayumi Temby. Born on the streets of Tokyo on skateboards and mass sticker pasting, and subsequently transplanted to Sydney, Australia, Cupco both appreciates and satirizes the ludicrous and ridiculous nature of modern society. Cupco animated cartoons have appeared on “Yo Gabba Gabba,” original pieces have been part of several group shows at Giant Robot, as well as featured in the massive Pop Culture auctions at Christie’s Auction House. Cupco has made a limited edition sneaker for Converse, and the recent “U.N. of Cupco” held in Sydney Australia featured a diverse group of artists taking on the Cupco brand – including exclusive original pieces by Tado, Jon Burgerman, Le Merde, Dehara, Bwana Spoons and Shawnimals.
This will be the final month for Metropolis Gallery In Lancaster – in the new year we will be relocating to Philadelphia. Thanks to all of you for your support over the past 3 years, we couldn’t have made it this far without you! We hope to see you all here one last time!
