The world’s first ecstasy shop has officially opened in Amsterdam today, thanks to the political youth group Liberal Democrats (D66). The organization calls for a decriminalization of the drug, and is pushing for a legal treatment of ecstasy similar to how cannabis is distributed throughout the Netherlands, so they’ve decided to open a shop that sells ecstasy to make a statement. Unfortunately, those wanting to grab some legitimate MDMA from the shop would have to go elsewhere — the shop is only selling placebos to help demonstrate a plan that would benefit the entire country.
Dirkjam Tijs, president of the Young Democrats, commented on the overview of the store’s demonstration: “We can prevent minors from buying, make sure there’s no overdose in pills and educate people on ways to minimize the risks involved with ecstasy-usage.”

The store, called MDMJA (“Ja” means “yes” in Dutch”), is handing out information on how the legal distribution of ecstasy should be handled, if there ever is one, and just how the decriminalization of drug use will benefit all of the country. The Liberal Democrats are also asking for customers to sign a petition, aiming for a goal of 40,000 signatures so parliament must acknowledge the issue of legalization of drug use.
