Paramount Pictures seems to be on the right track with the sequel to 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by adding in fan-favorite baddies Bebop and Rocksteady. Paramount’s vice chairman, Rob Moore took the stage at CinemaCon to confirm some info on the TMNT sequel. Stephen Amell of Arrow fame is slated to be the beloved Casey Jones. There are also rumors of Krang making an appearance, but IMDB doesn’t show the character listed.
Michael Bay is, of course, signed on as one of the primary producers again and Megan Fox is back as April, but Earth To Echo‘s Dave Green is signed on to direct. Green is largely untested but was able to triple his budget with Echo and shows a lot of promise with a young audience.
A major criticism of the first film is that it focused too heavily on April O’Neal and that’s a valid argument, but if you look back to the 90s TMNT flicks they also focused heavily on a relatable human character and used the turtles as a way to push along their story (April in the first and Kino in the second) – lackluster writing and likely overproducing (the first film has 3 writers and 11 producers credited) caused the quality to go downhill in 2014’s TMNT.
Either way, the addition of some proven characters should make TMNT2’s 2016 release highly anticipated.
