Interview: Matthew Petz Discusses His Online Comic 'War of the Woods'

H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is one of the most influential sci-fi stories of all time. Its impact can be seen in all forms of popular media, including the hit television series The X-Files and V, movies Mars Attacks, Independence Day, and even the popular video game franchise, Halo.

Matthew Petz’s War of the Woods is an imaginative spin on the classic tale, telling the story from the perspective of woodland creatures. As busy as he is both writing and drawing the comic, Petz was gracious enough to reach out to me and take the time to answer a few questions.

First off, why don’t you explain to us what War of the Woods is exactly?

Well, War of the Woods is my version of the classic ” Aliens invade Earth” story. Only instead of following humans we see it from the point of view of the animal kingdom. Specifically following a father and son otter and a turtle in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Along the way we’ll be meeting a whole host of animals and how they survive and fight back against the alien threat.

Re-telling War of the Worlds from the perspective of woodland creatures is definitely a unique and interesting spin on a classic sci-fi story, but why go with woodland creatures? Why not go with fish, or bugs, or something? Like sharks. People LOVE sharks.

I think woodland creatures are somehow more… relatable ( if thats possible ), and sure sharks are awesome…but…( see next answer )

Speaking of sharks, are you a fan of Shark Week?

I am a fan of Shark Week, but ever since that footage of a great white jumping OUT OF THE WATER surfaced, its just too scary. Next we’ll learn they have a written alphabet, and proficiency in small arms… and really we’re done at that point.

Tell us about each of the characters so far. You could have easily made them bears, wolves, or even beavers. Was there any particular reason that you chose the animals that you did? Is it a sort of metaphorical thing?

No metaphors really. We follow three main characters. Nathaniel whose an otter and his son, Phineas. They are joined by Isaac a turtle. Isaac is a grandfather figure to Phin. As to why I picked otters ? My girlfriend is obsessed with them. Plus the story started to make sense when I pictured a little boy otter running through the woods with a turtle strapped to his head like a helmet.

So right now you have War of the Woods up on Zuda Comics. For those who don’t know, what is Zuda?

Zuda is DC Comics’ online web comic imprint. Its really awesome. They have a bunch of amazing ongoing comics they are updated each month. Along with the ongoing comics, each month there is a competition between 10 new comics. The comic at the end of the month with the most votes goes onto become a regular feature on the site. Its all free too. Free to read the ongoing comics and vote in the competitions. All you have to do is sign up and start reading.

There’s currently 8 pages of War of the Woods right now. How far do you plan on taking this thing?

I actually have a really grand plan to the story. Right now I see it as 3 seasons or books broken up into 100 page installments. I have the first 100 pages pretty plotted out, and the major beats for the remaining story written.

Where can people find out more about you and your latest projects?

For War Of The Woods I’ve set up a blog. It has links to a sketchbook PDF, a theme song mp3 and some other fun stuff. That’s at http://monsterislandmedia.com/war.

You can also follow me at twitter.com/matthewpetz for updates.

My own website is monsterislandmedia.com. It has links to all kinds of projects and artwork.

Alright Matthew, thanks for your time. Any closing comments you’d like to end with?

Just to check out the comic at www.zudacomics.com/node/1661. Most importantly if you like it, take a few minutes to sign up and vote for it and then add it to your favorites. Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to get the word out !

A Little Bit On The Awesome Show #12 – Level Up Video Games

awesomeshowheader

For this week’s episode, I visited a local game shop called Level Up Video Games. Tucked away behind bigger buildings, almost hidden, Level Up is just a small shack that you’d never notice if you weren’t looking for it, but that’s all part of its charm. This is the only store for miles that specializes in oldschool gaming. You want an Atari 2600, Jaguar, Virtual Boy, NES, or other retro console? This is the place to go. They also have a great selection of collectibles, strategy guides, and import games.

The owner, Paul, was awesome enough to allow me the time to interview him for the show. He talks about his store’s humble beginnings, why he decided to focus on the retro gaming niche, and his plans for the future.

As always, please comment, rate, and subscribe!

These Fatal Fury hats are given away for free to anyone who wants one. How awesome is that!?

DSC02108
I bought myself a Sega Saturn a while ago for the sole purpose of playing Nights, but I never found a complete copy, so my Saturn library consists of absolutely nothing. It figures I’d find this here when I was flat broke. Can you believe I’ve never actually played this game?

DSC02126
The ceiling in this place is covered in posters and there’s a bunch of hanging Super Scopes and random controllers. In all seriousness, I’d really like to know what the hell Atari was thinking when they made the Jaguar controller.

I really couldn’t stop drooling over this case. I NEED those Darkstalkers figures! Fun fact: when I was in middle school, I used to draw Victor (the Frankenstein monster) in Jnco shorts and Airwalk shoes doing kickflips. I was weird kid.

I totally forgot to ask Paul what was up with this arcade machine. When we first walked in, it was showing the original Metroid, and in the video you can see that it’s showing the Ninja Turtles game. And it has two screens!

Other than the female anatomy, nothing gets my willy wet like a bunch of oldschool games still in their boxes. Orgasmic.

Out of all the game stores in my area (and there’s a buttload) Level Up Video games is the only store to carry retro import stuff. I almost wish they carried some of the high-profile current-gen imports like the ones shown in this mega retro import games post, but at least they have something. That’s more than most people can say about ANY game store in their area.

DSC02125
This is the shelf behind the counter and it’s like a museum of retro gaming awesomeness. I might have to pick up one of those clear N64’s and an extra Game Boy for chiptuning.

So…

…much…

…awesome…

…stuff!!!

Level Up Video Games also wins the award for best game store sign ever.

If you’re ever within an hour of Wyomissing, PA, I highly advise you to check this place out. it’s well worth the drive just for the experience alone, even if you don’t wind up buying anything. For store hours, contact info, and message boards, check out levelupvideogames.org.

Video Interview: Gamepark Holdings Talks About the GP2X Wiz Portable Gaming System

During my trip to the VGXpo in Philly this weekend, Gamepark Holdings was gracious enough to talk to me about their amazing little handheld, the GP2X Wiz.

The Wiz has been a round for  a while, but for those who don’t know, it’s a touch-screen-enabled handheld console that operates on Linux. This means that it can play Flash games as well as SNES, NES, and just about any other type of emulations. It also plays videos, music, and has a photo viewer, E-Book reader, comics viewer, and a planner that utilizes the system’s voice recording functions!

Basically, if you can put it on an SD card, the chances are good that you’ll be able to play it on the Wiz.

On November, 15th, Gamepark Holdings plans on unveiling the FunGP App Store which will not only contain free downloadable games for your Wiz, but game designers will also be able to upload their creations to share with the community!

The Wiz is only $179.99 and comes with 11 built-in games. While the screen is a little bit on the small side and the graphics can’t compare with the DS or PSP, its unique library, touch screen, Linux OS capabilities, and affordable price make the GP2X Wiz a must-have for any hardcore gamer. This is especially perfect for someone like myself who is big into Japanese-y games, retro games, and bullet hell shooters.

If you’re interested in purchasing a GP2X Wiz for your own, please support Albotas.com by purchasing from the following link: BUY GP2X Wiz from Play-Asia.com!
