I haven’t been this excited for a kid’s show since I was, well, a kid!
In case you didn’t know, Adventure Time was an animated short by Pendleton Ward and it was picked up as a full series by Cartoon Network. Most of the jokes aren’t really funny because of the punchlines, they’re just funny because they’re so ridiculous and don’t make much sense. I’m not sure if kids will get the humor, but I know my DVR is set to record the shit outta’ this show when it drops.
I’ve noticed that the retro gaming aesthetic is becoming increasingly popular in the media and advertising lately. Above is a Nike ad featuring the French footballer Patrice Evra.
Flipbook animation featuring Jesus plowing through World 1-1 with God-like speed and strength. Am I going to hell for posting this? I’d like to think Jesus thinks it’s pretty funny too.
As awesome as this is, it kinda’ pisses me off. I’ve been wanting to make my own short video game and/or video game movie featuring things like Dunnys and classic games and graffiti. I made a few sprites and they were based on the sprites from the game River City Ransom. Looks likeANO beat me to the punch and even had my same idea for a crazy shmup level and the Mega Man 2 start screen. Oh well…
Steve Jones aka Eyebath made this crazy 8-bit inspired music video for the song “The Early Sheets” by The Lost Levels. I wonder if the group had any clue that the video would be 64,012 times better than their song. I also wonder if this made them a tad angry/jealous. Anyway, stick with the whole video because it gets pretty crazy near the end.
The amazing trailer for Ninja Assassin looked badass enough, but now that it’s been re-done in Lego form, there should be some kind of Surgeon General’s warning or something for people who can’t handle too much awesomeness in one sitting.
Wes Anderson has turned the classic Roald Dahl book, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, into a stop-motion movie with character designs based on drawings that his brother made. Nothing unusual since his brother is known for doing art for his movies. He even painted the luggage in The Darjeeling Limited, which just so happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time.
This trailer might turn some people off since it doesn’t have the same high-quality stop-motion you’d find in something like Coraline, but I happen to like it. It reminds me of those old made-for-TV storybook adaptations that they used to show on Nickelodeon and PBS back in the day.
The Fantastic Mr. Fox features the voice talents of Wes Anderson movie vets like Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Anjelica Huston, as well as other big names like George Clooney, Willem Dafoe, and Meryl Streep. It opens in theaters on November 13th.
The Wu-Tang Clan are awesome enough on their own, but when you throw Legos into the mix, you get a whole new level of awesomeness. The video for Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ has been remade by Davo, who also did the short clip for Killer Tape (above) and a shot-for-shot “Director’s Cut” of Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ which breaks down the animations and makes you appreciate it a little more.
Back in 1946, Salvidor Dali and Walt Disney teamed up to create the short cartoon Destino. Dali worked with a Disney artist named John Hench, doing a lot of story boards, but they only ever got around to shooting 18 seconds of test footage before the project was abandoned.
Back in 1999 while Walt Disney’s nephew Roy Edward Disney was working on Phantasia 2000, he decided to finish the Destino project based on the original storyboards along with some input from John Hench himself. Unfortunately it never made it into Phantasia 2000, but luckily we have a little thing called YouTube. The final result is a mix of traditional hand drawn and computer animation. This is probably the weirdest Disney cartoon you’ll ever see, so you should definitely check it out before Disney’s lawyers take it down.
Found this over at I Heart Cool Stuff and it’s totally worth a watch. It reminds me of the random short clips that Nickelodeon would play in between commercials.
Takada, an animator for Tatsunoko Productions (Speed Racer, Gatchaman) shows off just how powerful the Moving Memo Pad(Ugoku Memo-chou) app for the DSi truly is. Hopefully this app makes it to the American DSiWare shop soon. Then again, you could always download similar homebrew apps like Animanatee or Inchworm for your R4 to play on your regular DS, but unfortunately the DSi is homebrew proof… for now.
