25 Works of Graffiti Art Made With Legos

So, I was browsing the internets today in search of something fresh to feature for Daily Graffiti when I stumbled onto an awesome world that I’d never heard of before: the world of Lego graffiti. There’s a Flickr group called Urban Culture and Lego and it’s  filled with pictures of truly amazing Lego art paying homage to one of the 4 pillars of hip hop.

Custom Ice Grabbit by Rsin

Rsin must’ve just read my beef with toys piece because he just sent in pics of a SICK new custom piece that he did for someone. I was actually at the first local show this dude had a few years ago and his skills have leveled up by leaps and bounds.

Here’s what he has to say about the piece:

This is the second Ice Grabbit I was asked to do by a private collector who wanted a set.  So we decided on 1 fire and 1 Ice.  I completed the Fire grabbit a few weeks back and had to figure a way to make the ice one just as good.  So I spent the past 2 weeks trying to find me something I could use on it so it wasn’t just painted.  Finally I decided to create a patch of Ice shards coming out its back.  Love the way the two pieces look together.  I have a lot of fun working with these Grabbits.  Anyway enjoy, comments appreciated, and if interested in work please email me Rsinart@msn.com.  Thanks

Here’s a gallery showing off more of the Ice Grabbit along with the Fire Grabbit. Excellent photos of an excellent custom.

Fresh-ass Fanart - Mario's Fiery Fungal Phallus

Sankaku Complex used this picture to head one of their “top 10″ posts. No clue where it came from, but it’s awesomely absurd on so many levels. Mario’s hat is on fire, he’s throwing up \m/etal horns, he’s rocking a Super Star chain, and his dick is out. Oh yeah, and in case you’ve ever wondered, Mario’s dick is a veiny mushroom. On fire.

If anyone knows who made this glorious piece of deeply moving art, let me know in the comments.

Daily Graffiti: Love Thy Neighbor by ABOVE

My friend and mega-talented graffiti artist ABOVE recently emailed me with pics and info about a piece he just did in Cuba. Rather than just re-word everything, I figured I’d just share the email in its entirety.

Hey Robby!
I just recently got back from Cuba where I made a very important and special site specific stencil commenting and drawing more awareness to the crisis in Haiti! I would greatly appreciate it if you could post the photos and VIDEO link so more people can be informed about the staggering statistics and crucial support Haiti needs right now. Your involvement is greatly appreciated.
I appreciate your consideration and look forward to seeing this on Albotas!!!
Sincerely,
Above.

Some Facts >>>  “Help thy neighbor”

Cuba is less than 90 miles away from Haiti making them very close neighbors. The young and courageous neighbor is embarking to Haiti to help out those who have fallen victim. The recent earthquakes in Haiti has taken over 230,000 innocent lives, wounded 300,000 and made 1,200,000 people homeless.
Please GET INVOLVED and help donate to send aid and resources to the people of Haiti.

HELP THY NEIGHBOR from ABOVE on Vimeo.

Another awesome piece from a truly talented artist. If you haven’t done anything to help out with the crisis in Haiti, please get involved! Even if it means donating a dollar or a few cents.

The Awesome 80's Inspired Artwork of Michael Steele

I’d never heard of Australian artist Michael Steele before, but regular Albotas.com commenter and message board user Don Schwabs recently visted a Steele exhibit at Australia’s Gorker Gallery called Accumulating. Don puts it best when he writes “His works are made of pure awesome extract. They’re clusters of colour and show glimpses of all the cool shit from your childhood (well, mine and anyone else born in the 80s at least). It’s almost as if the little prince from Katamari has rolled his ball through my mind and picked up all the stuff I love then dumped it on canvas.

Go to any art shows lately? Know of any that are coming up? Why not share the awesomeness over on our message boards?

Suckadelic + Cupco @ Metropolis in Lancaster, PA Dec. 4-31

decad

This Friday I plan on heading out to Metropolis in Lancaster, PA to check out the Suckadelic + Cupco show. Metropolis is the only place around that ever does anything cool pertaining to the art/toy scene. They’re actually where I bought my first full case of Dunnys. Unfortunately, this will be the last show that Metropolis hosts in Lancaster; they’ll be re-locating to Philly next year.

I’ll try and get some footage and pics from thet big shebang. If you see me, say hi.

Here’s all the info regarding the show from the Metropolis newsletter:

“Suckadelic & Cupco: New Works!” at Metropolis Gallery, December 4th through 31st

Debuting December 4th and running through the 31st, Metropolis Gallery is proud to be showcasing two of the most insanely notorious Pop Culture satirists on the globe. Both Suckadelic (aka The Sucklord) and Cupco have combined fine art, crafts, designer vinyl and even performance art to lampoon everything from Star Wars to Michael Jackson. Their attack on the nerd world of classic comics, D&D role playing games and Japanese sci-fi marries Mad Magazine’s irreverent parodies with Warhol’s “commerce-as-fine art” confrontations. Though both artists live on either side of the planet and work in different mediums, they arrive at the same place: Pop Art for the new millennium.

Suckadelic
Simultaneously a toy line, a sci-fi hip-hop group, a performance artist, and an all-around mad scientist, Suckadelic was first on the designer toy scene way back in 1998. Featured in publications as varied as Entertainment Weekly, Spin, Vice, Wired, and The New York Post, Suckadelic has also been championed by Kidrobot owner Paul Budnitz, interviewed on NPR: “All Things Considered,” and done installations for the legendary NYC store ALIFE. Possibly best known for creating the first ever homosexual action figure, Suckadelic has been embraced by the long-running Gay magazines Genre, Instinct and Homo Xtra. Most recently, Suckadelic was asked by Topps Cards to create a special Star Wars trading card series. Suckadelic will be here First Friday for the opening, so please stop by and say hello.

Cupco is the design, animation, illustration and doll-making brainchild of Lucas Temby and his wife/muse Mayumi Temby. Born on the streets of Tokyo on skateboards and mass sticker pasting, and subsequently transplanted to Sydney, Australia, Cupco both appreciates and satirizes the ludicrous and ridiculous nature of modern society. Cupco animated cartoons have appeared on “Yo Gabba Gabba,” original pieces have been part of several group shows at Giant Robot, as well as featured in the massive Pop Culture auctions at Christie’s Auction House. Cupco has made a limited edition sneaker for Converse, and the recent “U.N. of Cupco” held in Sydney Australia featured a diverse group of artists taking on the Cupco brand – including exclusive original pieces by Tado, Jon Burgerman, Le Merde, Dehara, Bwana Spoons and Shawnimals.

This will be the final month for Metropolis Gallery In Lancaster – in the new year we will be relocating to Philadelphia. Thanks to all of you for your support over the past 3 years, we couldn’t have made it this far without you! We hope to see you all here one last time!

Arcade Expressionism

Brock Davis aka “Laser Bread” has broken down iconic imagery from classic video games into basic shapes and colors for some pretty striking results. In case you’re not quite as geeky as you thought, the above image is Brock’s take on Dig Dug.

RoboCop – The Alcoholic Zombie

4132978483_6d16ef5d48_b

Here’s a bizarre piece from the artist known as Theory. Nothing in this picture really makes sense, but that’s probably what makes it so awesome.

From the artist:

Took me forever! Had a blast doing this, though! Hopefully the project that this is set for will work out…and possibly colour printed stickers? :3

It’ll be interesting to see more pieces from this set if this first pic is anything to go by.

Thanks to nelson, who could drink Alcoholic Zombie RoboCop under the table any day of the week, for sending this in.

Daily Graffiti: Twilight Graffiti (Yes, it exists and it’s very stupid.)

3797850979_af6d62fae8_b

I’d just like to apologize in advance for what is no doubt the absolute worst Daily Graffiti segment in Albotas history. If it seems like I’m just trying to ride the Twilight hype train to score traffic, it’s because I am. And also, this graffiti is too horrible awful not to share.

Do girls really not realize how completely corny this garbage is?

3328858882_4cc32c64d3_o
Could you imagine some dude planning and scouting for weeks before finally putting this up. Dude should be ashamed.

1977802626_6641559198_b
I found this one on Flickr and the description is freaking awesome:

This is the most awesome thing ever. It is graffiti about books! Some kid loves Edward Cullen from Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight Series” so much, they etched it onto this table!

Dear Lord… really!?

Thank you, Twilight, for creating a future full of easily-moistened, stupid, needy girls with far lower  standards than girls today who will put out at the snap of a finger. Or maybe that’s not such a bad thing…

Daily Graffiti – 8-bit Ninja Gaiden Graffiti

4010270832_525f634808_b

After all these years, Ryu Hayabusa still looks badass in sprite form. Here he is running along some wall somewhere. This piece is by 8-bit graffiti artist GameBoyOne. Be sure to check out more of his work on his Flickr page.

An Insightful Interview with Legendary Graffiti Artist ABOVE

This is an interview with ABOVE for Walrus TV taken from the DVD The Run Up, a collection of intimate one-on-one interviews with some of today’s most influential photographers, artists, and designers.

Watch it. Get inspired. Go do something productive and meaningful with your life.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Above Interview from “The Run Up”

Eventually you’re going to get there. It might take a day, it might take a lifetime, but through that persistence, and through that determination and drive, I think there’s definitely a lot of beauty in that. And a lot of power. That’s what I want to tap into.
-Above

Often found hanging from power lines or melding with urban architecture, Above’s site specific stencils, paintings, and installations push past the traditional expectations of graffiti. The evolution of his name from text to a symbol inspired him to explore less conventional media, leading to his trademark wooden mobiles. Whether subtle or massive, his pieces retain an innate sense of beauty through their dialogue with the surrounding environment. Refusing to show his work in galleries, Above has instead “toured” through Europe and North and South America to get his work up. Watch the interview from “The Run Up,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

Amazing NES Mods Featuring Kill Bill, Battletoads, and a Red Velvet NES

4097366239_f57555ac1d_o

I’ve featured countless custom designer toys and custom console mods on Albotas throughout the years, but these custom NES systems by Thretris (spotted on Tiny Cartridge) are the first I’ve seen that have sort of a designer toy aesthetic. The polish and level of professional quality on these are amazing.

The line between toy customizing and console modding is just a bit more blurry.

This is the Killtendo Entertainment System (KES) and is a companion to another Thretris custom, the Billtendo Killboy

Dubbed Sky, all I can think of when I look at this one is Mega Man.

This one’s called 80’s Reborn, which I can kind of see, but this one gives off the biggest designer toy vibe.

And since we’re on the topic of custom NES consoles, check out this red velvet NES by Phil McCoy and sexy-ass Battletoads NES by Phil’s friend Greg which were also featured on Tiny Cartridge:

Possibly one of the best NES mods ever.

Order of the Arcane – A Custom Vinyl Toy Series by Josh (f+) Pierce That Will Probably Blow Your Mind

ArcaneflyerWebMED-1

Imagine you find yourself somewhere in Middle Earth from J.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books, only your tripping balls off shrooms and extacy. You’d probably experience something close to Order of the Arcane, a new series of custom designer toys by Josh (f+) Pierce.

Order of the Arcane is set in a world of fantasy and lost Majik. Think of it as Hellboy meets urban vinyl meets just plain trippy and awesome.

Pierce will unveil his collection at Red Hot Robot in Phoenix, AZ from 7pm – 10pm tonight, November 13th.

If you can’t make it to the show yourself, you can check out each custom in the a huge gallery past the jump. These are hands down some of the sickest customs I’ve seen, so do yourself the favor and check out some picks that will rock your face without mercy and inspire the living shit out of your brain. “Oh! He got tha’ mango Sentinel!”

I have no idea who birthed this piece of nerdy artistic genius, but it obviously kicks eleven different kinds of ass.

If you have no idea why this is awesome, go hurt yourself like that albino guy in The Davinci Code a few times, then watch this video.
