Josh “f+” Pearce is a toy artist who’s done quite a few Spawn Dunnys as commission pieces for collectors. He sent me a link to his blog post featuring all the Spawn Dunnys he’s done – starting with his first one ever(above) and ending with he latest one (at the end of the post) – and asked if I’d share them, so I am.
Warning: Truly sickening work lies ahead. Prepare to be jealous of this dude’s talent.
Tony Nakanari just sent in pics of his first custom of 2010. His name is Akaoni (sometimes spelled Aka Oni which means “Red Devil” or “Red Demon”) and he was made using an 8″ Bic Buddy figure designed by Marka27.
About the piece, Nakanari says:
The Bic Buddy Custom Show introducing the new 8” Bic Buddy features 40+ artist customs of the big brother to the previously released mini created by Marka27. As the very first preview, here’s our Japanese legend evil barbarian-like Akaoni (Red Demon) piece. This one rocks a clean stylized ‘toon aesthetic capped off with a spiked club and necklace that complete the image. Also is origanl from my last painting
Here’s that painting he’s talking about.
This dude needs to stop with the crazy clean lines. He’s just too good.
The Bic Buddy Custom Show will take place on both coasts, starting off in Los Angeles @ Crewest (3.27, 6 to 9 PM) and then in Brooklyn @ Zakka (4.9, 6 to 9 PM).
There’s a pretty awesome Instructable posted by Motadacruz showing how to make this rad Domo-kun nightlight for kids using some stuff he had around the house. Looks like a fun little project to take on during a lazy weekend, so I might give this a shot.
Wash your stinky ass with NES controller soap from DigitalSoaps! Perfect for the nerd in your life who’s not too keen on hygiene. And best of all, it smells like Mountain Dew!
Warning: If it’s your nerd’s first time bathing with NES controller soap, do not let him go unsupervised as they may try to eat the soap due to its Mountainy Dewy scent.
Here’s a custom Bambaboss figure by the one and only Rsin for the Multiversal Group Show in Miami. This is actually the first custom Bambaboss I’ve ever seen and it’s freaking amazing. Loving all the added details like the horns and tube.
For those who don’t know, the Bambaboss is a figure designed by one of my favorite artists of all time, Ashley Wood. He typically does comic book art, but he also releases some high end designer figures. I’m not 100% certain, but I think the Bambaboss is his first foray into the DIY scene. You can see what an unpainted Bambaboss looks like here.
Another fresh piece from Rsin. This dude actually lives in my area and it’s been a real pleasure to watch hi work evolve as he masters his craft. Seriously, toy scene, you need to watch the fuck out for this guy.
Check out more pics of Rsin’s Bambaboss in the gallery below.
Original plan was to use metal keyrings for the pull rings, but I wanted something I could safely hurl at the TV when stupid things come on.
This leads me to believe that this dude’s a huge pussy. Everyone knows that real men throw actual grenades at their television sets whenever they disapprove of lame and non-manly programming.
More plushey explodey grenadey pics of awesomeness
I get a buttload of emails each week from artists asking me to feature their latest custom toys on the site. Sometimes the submissions are kind of stinky. Sometimes they’re just “meh.”
And Sometimes they sort of blow my mind, like this one.
Aaron Boy is an up and coming artist from Phoenix, Arizona and he recently completed a 10″ Teddy Troop figure that he’s named Baxter the Lonely Dead Bear. This figure’s already been featured on the official Teddy Troops website and it’s easy to see why. His work sort of gives off a Greg “Craola” Simkins/Brent Nolasco vibe, but it manages to stay fresh without seeming copycat-ish.
I highly recommend checking out Aaron Boy’s blog for more of his work. I have a feeling that if he keeps at it, he’ll be a shining star in the designer toy/urban art world in no time.
Crafty artist Beru Betto has a tutorial on his blog which shows you how to turn your paper towel rolls into pixel art. Like most good ideas, I speculate that this one came to Beru while he was on the toilet. This brings a whole new meaning to the term papercraft.
Can you imagine how many dumps this guy had to take before he could finish one of his pixel characters? I wonder if he sped up the process with late night Taco Bell runs and a few laxatives.
Porlzilla will be releasing an all new Ozzel colorway this Wednesday!
Living in the deepest and darkest rainforests there is a nomadic race of ozzels who are said to have a very dark grip of the voodoo ways and a nasty taste for ozzel meat. ugh! I wouldn’t want to look into any rustling bushes while wandering through a forest and coming face to face with one of these little fellas! That would be one scary sight I tell you! With their weird ritual face paint in the style of a skull, skulls of little ozzels or animals they’ve caught proudly dangling from around their neck’s and don’t even get me started on the black slime that comes from their mouths!! Heaven knows whats been in there!
For those who don’t know, Ozzels are hand-made designer toys that come in hand-made packaging with all kinds of goodies like buttons and stickers which are also handmade. The creativity and degree of quality in these little resin figures is what makes Porlzilla one of the absolute best DIY toy producers out there. This new Hoodoo Voodoo colorway is hands down their best yet.
On November 19th, MUNNYWORLD will explode as Kidrobot releases four new members of the Munny Family: Bub, Trikky, Rooz, and Raffy. Just like the Mini Munny, these 4″ DIY vinyl figures will retail for around $10 and come with a surprise accessory, stickers, and marker.
I’m all for new things and giving the consumer more options, but it seems like Kidrobot has turned their back on the established 18-35 artsy/hipster demographic that made them famous in the first place. I mean, “Rooz” and “Raffy,” seriously!? Sounds like the names of something Fisher Price would put out for pre-schoolers. They kinda’ look like toys that Fisher Pric would put out, too.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix. As far as I’m concerned, I’ll stick with the O.G. Munny, thank you very much.
