Get a Pikachu-Colored Pichu at GameStop

From January 30th to February 14th if you take your DS or DSi and a copy of Pokemon Platinum/Diamond/Pearl to your nearest GameStop you can download a special Pikachu-Colored Pichu. If you transfer this special Pichu to your Heart Gold or Soul silver game, you’ll be able to catch a Spiky-Eared Pichu.

Other than looking different than your run-of-the-mill-Pichu, I’m not too sure what other advantages Pikachu-Colored Pichu and Spiky-Eared Pichu have.

Professor Layton Revoltech makes me feel good inside.

Some time this March you’ll be able to get yourself this awesome Professor Layton Revoltech figure for around $25. He comes with a cool stand as well as a sweet little table & chair set. Other accessories include a tiny little book, a tiny little pen, and a tiny little teacup.

You can currently pre-order one for yourself at Hobby Search, Hobby Link Japan or Otacute.

Interview: Matthew Petz Discusses His Online Comic 'War of the Woods'

H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is one of the most influential sci-fi stories of all time. Its impact can be seen in all forms of popular media, including the hit television series The X-Files and V, movies Mars Attacks, Independence Day, and even the popular video game franchise, Halo.

Matthew Petz’s War of the Woods is an imaginative spin on the classic tale, telling the story from the perspective of woodland creatures. As busy as he is both writing and drawing the comic, Petz was gracious enough to reach out to me and take the time to answer a few questions.

First off, why don’t you explain to us what War of the Woods is exactly?

Well, War of the Woods is my version of the classic ” Aliens invade Earth” story. Only instead of following humans we see it from the point of view of the animal kingdom. Specifically following a father and son otter and a turtle in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Along the way we’ll be meeting a whole host of animals and how they survive and fight back against the alien threat.

Re-telling War of the Worlds from the perspective of woodland creatures is definitely a unique and interesting spin on a classic sci-fi story, but why go with woodland creatures? Why not go with fish, or bugs, or something? Like sharks. People LOVE sharks.

I think woodland creatures are somehow more… relatable ( if thats possible ), and sure sharks are awesome…but…( see next answer )

Speaking of sharks, are you a fan of Shark Week?

I am a fan of Shark Week, but ever since that footage of a great white jumping OUT OF THE WATER surfaced, its just too scary. Next we’ll learn they have a written alphabet, and proficiency in small arms… and really we’re done at that point.

Tell us about each of the characters so far. You could have easily made them bears, wolves, or even beavers. Was there any particular reason that you chose the animals that you did? Is it a sort of metaphorical thing?

No metaphors really. We follow three main characters. Nathaniel whose an otter and his son, Phineas. They are joined by Isaac a turtle. Isaac is a grandfather figure to Phin. As to why I picked otters ? My girlfriend is obsessed with them. Plus the story started to make sense when I pictured a little boy otter running through the woods with a turtle strapped to his head like a helmet.

So right now you have War of the Woods up on Zuda Comics. For those who don’t know, what is Zuda?

Zuda is DC Comics’ online web comic imprint. Its really awesome. They have a bunch of amazing ongoing comics they are updated each month. Along with the ongoing comics, each month there is a competition between 10 new comics. The comic at the end of the month with the most votes goes onto become a regular feature on the site. Its all free too. Free to read the ongoing comics and vote in the competitions. All you have to do is sign up and start reading.

There’s currently 8 pages of War of the Woods right now. How far do you plan on taking this thing?

I actually have a really grand plan to the story. Right now I see it as 3 seasons or books broken up into 100 page installments. I have the first 100 pages pretty plotted out, and the major beats for the remaining story written.

Where can people find out more about you and your latest projects?

For War Of The Woods I’ve set up a blog. It has links to a sketchbook PDF, a theme song mp3 and some other fun stuff. That’s at http://monsterislandmedia.com/war.

You can also follow me at twitter.com/matthewpetz for updates.

My own website is monsterislandmedia.com. It has links to all kinds of projects and artwork.

Alright Matthew, thanks for your time. Any closing comments you’d like to end with?

Just to check out the comic at www.zudacomics.com/node/1661. Most importantly if you like it, take a few minutes to sign up and vote for it and then add it to your favorites. Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to get the word out !

Classy Professor Layton DS/DSi Case for the Geeky Gentleman

tb-proflayton1

Since I have the word “gentleman” in the title of this post, I figured that now would be a perfect time to utilize a a pretty amazing jpeg that’s been collecting dust on my desktop.

Ready? Here it is:

nogentleman

Okay. Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, we now return you to your regular scheduled post about something.

Professor Layton is the frustrating-but-awesome brain teaser game for the DS that everyone loves, but few have the patience to actually complete.

Mori games has designed a very gentlemanly DS/DSi case shaped to look like a book and it even features the professor layton tophat logo embossed on the front and on the zipper pulls. it can be yours for $23.90 from NCSX.

If you’re not quite one for gentlemanly leather cases, there’s also these DSi covers in brown and a slightly-less gentlemanly wine red.

tb-proflayton

The DSi covers are available from NCSX as well for only $20.90. If you have to chose, I’d say spend the extra $3 and go for the awesome leather bookish one. Go big or go home and good day, sirs!

EA’s Answer to Zelda – Shonen Kininden Tsumuji

tumblr_ktah7ikDf41qzp9weo1_400

EA Japan’s upcoming DS game, Shonen Kininden Tsumuji, is pretty much Zelda, but with ninjas. This might be a bad thing for Link and friends because, as we all know, ninjas make everything, like, a gazillion times better.

This game reminds me of that other Zelda-like game with an ancient Japanese setting and heavy use of imagery inspired by traditional Japanese paintings. You know, the one with the wolf that has a sequel coming to the DS in 2010

Geeze, with Zelda: The Spirit Tracks, Okamiden (the one with the wolf^__-), 3D Dot Heroes, and now Shonen Kininden Tsumuji, it seems like a good time for those who are fans of Zelda-esque gameplay.

Here’s a trailer for Shonen Kininden Tsumuji (Legend of the Boy Ninja Tsumuji).

Check out more on the official Japanese site.

Nintendo Goes Batsh*t Insane, Announces DSi XL for $220

winered

If you thought the PSP Go was stupid, get a load of this garbage. Not even a full year after the release of the DSi, Nintendo announced the DSi XL (DSi LL in Japan), which is basically just an oversized DSi for old people. With colors like Wine Red, Dark Brown, and Natural White, I doubt many kids or tech-savvy adults will be putting this on their X-mas lists.

dsillbrownopen

And oh my God look how big the stylus is!

The 4.3″ screens are a whopping 93% larger than the DS Lite and each DSi LL/XL comes pre-loaded with two Brain Training mini games and the DS Easy Dictionary. No word on whether or not the built-in memory will be bigger than the original DSi.

The DSi LL is scheduled to hit Japan on November 21st for ¥20,000 (US$220) and a DSi XL European release is set for Q1 2010.

For $220 this thing had better be able to suck my dick or at least give me a hand job. Otherwise I’m holding out for the DSi XXL Pocket Mini.

Check out this Kotaku post for a list of DS Lite vs DSi vs DSi XL specs.

In case you don’t already know by now, Doki Doki Majo Shinpan is a series that puts you in the role of an average-high-school boy-turned-witch-hunter. As a witch hunter, it’s your job to rub and grope the girls in your high school. You get to feel up all kinds of chicks in cheerleader outfits, gym shorts, and so-on, using the DS stylus.

The special edition comes wit two cute little figurines…

Did I mention this game lets you feel up underage anime chicks?

These Kingdom Hearts phone straps are soooo f*cking cute!!!

230_11jpg

So I saw this post on Figure.fm where a dude customized his PSP and he had all these sweet One Piece straps on it which I thought looked pretty fresh. Then I felt the sudden urge to decorate my DSi with a gazillion bulky-but-cute straps, so I headed over to Play-Asia.com to start my quest.

I found these sweet Kingdom Hearts straps for only $9.90 each and I’m pretty sure I need the Sora and Cloud straps in order to live a happy life. For real.

There’s also Roxas, Riku, and Kairi who are also crazy cute. The more I look at ‘em, the more I’m thinking about just getting the whole set. Probably not the wisest investment, but I’ve spent more on way dumber crap.

‘Kaiju Busters’ – It’s Like ‘Earth Defense Force’ and ‘Monster Hunter’ had Sex!

kaijubusters

On another Ultraman-related note, Namco Bandai is working on Kaiju Busters for the DS. Similar to Monster Hunter, Kaiju Busters is all about collecting loot and co-op play, only you play as Ultraman’s Science Patrol who look like chibi versions of the Earth Defense Force guys.

edf2017

Kaiju Busters features over 500 weapons and 300+ missions, and you’ll even get to fight some of the famous Ultraman monsters like Red King and Gomora. The game drops exclusively for the DS in Japan this winter.

Here’s the trailer:

TinyCartridge put it best when they said, “The proposition of playing as a dude in a tie teaming up with other tie-wearing dudes and trying to take down a skyscraper-sized beast fulfills a fantasy I never knew I had. Yes, Earth Defense Force 2017 had a similar premise but no ties!

If you have a copy of Pokémon Platinum, now would be a good time to go catch yourself a Shaymin. It’ll only be available until November 8th, so go!

Sakura Note: A DS Game that Looks More than Just ‘Okay’

sakuranote

Sakura Note is a new DS game coming out from the makers of Contact, a DS game that had a decent amount of hype until people played it and realized the battle system was comprised of equal amounts of garbage and feces. Since I’m not particularly fond of garbage or feces, I never got around to playing Contact, but after seeing Sakura Note, I’m thinking I might have to.

Sakura Note was developed by a dream team lineup of gaming so-and-so’s. Here’s a snippet from 1up’s writeup:

“Sakura Note is immediately notable for the staff working on it. Nobuo Uematsu, well known for his contributions to the Final Fantasy series, is handling the music, and another old FF veteran, Hideo Minaba, is leading the visual department. Kazushige Nojima, writer of most of the Kingdom Hearts games, is doing the story here, and Contact designer Akira Ueda is the chief designer of this game as well. The whole thing’s being produced by Kenichiro Takagi, who’s fresh off completing Half-Minute Hero for Marvelous.

As far as the game itself goes, it’s a story-heavy, overhead-view adventure set within two towns and the surrounding countryside. A new girl, Nanami Yoshida, has just moved in to your neighborhood, and apparently she’s being targeted by a local band of ghosts and ghouls. It seems this has something to do with a pair of sakura (cherry blossom) trees that dominate the landscape of both towns, one slowly withering and another one blooming deep into the summertime, as if to make up for its weaker sibling. You, a normal boy, decide to get to the bottom of both mysteries, talking to people and unlocking new story episodes as you go along.”

Pokémon Heart Gold & Soul Silver Japanese Trailer

The trailer for the newest Pokémon game is here, and it looks just like the last DS entry to the series. Some noticeable differences are some sweet 3D cut-scenes before battles against Legendary Pokémon and the ability to pick a Pokémon from your party to walk around and interact with you. The game will also include a Pokémon Pedometer which you can transfer one of your Pokémon onto and level them up as you take steps. It’s sort of like the old Pocket Pikachu (which is going for $225 on Amazon for some reason).

I think I’m the only one pumped about this, but whatever. Silver and Gold were my favorite Pokémon games back in the day and I’m pumped to play the DS versions. Too bad they won’t come out in the U.S. until Spring 2010.

‘You Have To Burn The Rope’ Now on the DS!!!

tb-yhtbrt

If you’ve never heard of the supreme awesomeness that is You have To Burn The Rope, then I highly urge you to check it out the Flash version.

The epic game has been ported to the DS and it’s just as amazing as ever. There’s even a map now so you don’t get lost in the gigantic maze.
