Yesterday Griffon Enterprises announced this insanely cute Figguto! of Kanu Unchou as a cat. I’d never heard of Figguto! before, but it looks like they’re basically the same as a Figma or Revoltech figure.
Kanu comes with a stand, some clear box thing (really no clue what that is. maybe to store the parts?), 2 sets of kitty paws, 4 different faces, and two little figures of Ryuubi Gentoku and Sousou Moutoku! All this awesomeness for just around $40! I pre-ordered one for myself from Otacute.com, but it doesn’t come out until late April.
Fun fact: Otacute.com doesn’t require any billing info for pre-orders! Just add a pre-order item to your cart, and it’s yours! You don’t have to enter any credit card info until they email you letting you know that they have it in stock, but if you cancel your pre-order you have to pay a re-stock fee. I’m probably gonna abuse the crap out of this and pre-order way more than I can afford, but at least my shelves will be full of awesome toys!
Ikki Tousen: Xross is the follow-up the the PSP game Ikki Tousen: Eloquent Fist. Since this is Ikki Tousen we’re talking about, you can expect lots of punching, kicking, panties, boobies, and exploding clothes.
Xross is scheduled for an April 1st release in Japan and there’s also a limited edition dubbed the “New Gentei Bakuretsu Pack” (New Limited Explosion Pack) which comes with not one, but TWO adorable little K’anu Unchou Nendoroid figures; one featuring Kanu in her school uniform, and a swimsuit version. She even comes with a teensy little Dragon Blade!
The limited edition set will retail for ¥9,975 (about $110 USD), but it’s not bad considering nedoroids go for around $40 apiece. There’s also word that the LE set will come with a poster featuring an all new character, cards, and a drama CD which will all be packaged in a “sexy” box.
This week I decided to compare Figmas to their competitor, Revoltech.

Since I already have the Kanou Unchou Figma, I decided to get another Ikki Tousen girl, so I picked up Ryomou Shimei. I really wish Max Factory would make a version of Ryomou in her school outfit. She’s so much more adorable and innocent-looking. Maid outfit Ryomou is kinda’ intimidating.
Since I’d never had a Revoltech before, it was difficult choosing which one to get first. I really wanted Yokko from Gurren Lagann or Haruhi Suzamiya in her bunny costume, but I figured I’d test the waters by getting the cheapest Revoltech I could find, just in case I wound up hating them. So I wound up with Pocco, designed by master illustrator, Shunya Yamashita.
Here’s a closeup comparison of the hands. I like that the Figmas come with the little storage thingie. They also have hands that are more elegantly posed.

I feel like I came off a little harsh in my review of the Revoltech. I really liked it! I just think that Figmas offer more bang for their buck, even if they are a bit smaller. That doesn’t mean that I’m not planning out my next few Revoltech purchases. My shelves are gonna’ be LOADED!

It’s been and while and I thought I’d do something different. Blindboxed typically covers designer toys, but I figured I’d throw some anime figures in the mix. In this episode I review Max Factory’s Kanu UnchouFigma. This is the first Figma I’ve ever purchased and I’m fairly pleased with it.
The only bummer is that a few seconds after filming this episode, I accidentally broke the display base…
Fortunately, Kanu doesn’t need a display base to look bad-asss. Oh, and she also came with a cool cardboard backdrop. I originally thought that it was part of the box until the day after I shot this episode.
Here’s a better look at all the extra stuff it came with. Not bad for only $35, but you could probably find it cheaper elsewhere on the interwebs.

R-Line Griffon Enterprises will be releasing PVC figures of my two favorite anime ladies, Ryomou Shimei (left) and Kanu Unchou (right) from Ikki Tousen this December for 6,500 yen (about $72 USD). These figures were previously released with their dresses in tact, but apparently someone thought there should be battle damage versions. These are the “clear” battle damage versions, which implies that additional colorways will be released in the future.
I think “battle damage” is gonna’ be my new term for “naked.”
I like to think of myself as somewhat of a masculine dude. I rock a mohawk, tattoos, and facial piercings. I enjoy going out to clubs and “getting crunk” with my friends and dry humping with the ladies on the dance floor. I enjoy beer pong, keg stands, and shots. I have a penis. I have facial hair. I enjoy aggressive heavy metal music, and most of all, vaginas.
But I also like really cute Japanese things.
I’ve been collecting toys for a few years now, but my preference is usually either urban designer toys, or anime figures. As a rule, I usually hate on anything with obvious articulation. After all, joints are for action figures, and action figures are for little kids and uber-geeks, not cool kids like myself.
The first time I ever saw a Figma figure, I almost vomited all over myself. I think I actually diarrhead my pants from the sickness that was induced by the tacky display of ball-joints. Gross.
But then something happened. After a routine of browsing sites like DannyChoo.com and Figure.fm on a daily basis, I slowly succumbed to the cuteness of these articulated toys. I found myself falling in love with the little things, like how each figure comes with a number of faces with different expressions and extra sets of hands, each uniquely posed, or how each Figma includes a base for maximum diverse displayability.
Not to mention, there’s all kinds of accessories like mopeds and display stages than you can decorate using printed-out backgrounds. You can even download papercraft accessories like hats and Christmas trees from the Figma site!
You can find Figmas based on characters from popular anime and manga series like Lucky Star, TheMelancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Fate/Stay Night, and more. And while the PVC and resin statues that I’m used to collecting tend to hover around the $100 range, figmas are only about $35. They also look damn good on a shelf.
If you’ve been following the site this week, you know that I just recently visited the 2009 New York Anime Festival. My main goal at the festival was to either purchase a Haruhi Suzumiya or Hatsune Miku figma, but sadly, I wasn’t aware of how rare they are. However, I did find both Ryomou Shimei and Kanu Unchou from Ikki Tousen. I had some trouble deciding which one to get because Ryomou is my all time favorite, but the Kanu figure is just so badass looking.

She also came with a spare set of knockers, which I found kinda’ weird. While she’s not necessarily ultra-cute, she’s definitely badass. I just can’t wait to get more so that I can line my walls Danny-Choo-style.

Ryomou Shimei from the Battle Vixens manga and Ikki Tousen anime is my absolute favorite anime/manga character of all time. Shunya Yamashita is my favorite drawer-of-sexy-anime-ladies of all time. The fact that he’s designed this amazing Ryomou Shimei figure means that I’ll probably have to rob a bank some time soon because there’s no way that I’m letting my shelf go without this amazing piece.
This piece from Daiki Kougyo drops in January 2010 and will retail for 15, 540 yen aka about $173. Yikes.
