ALBOTAS Suggestion Box
As I write this post, Robby and I are chatting on Gmail about what we can do to make Albotas way better. We’re trying to conjure up some new article and feature ideas, as well as editorials to blab on and subjects to rant on. But we need more input and suggestions, and we need to hear it from the source of our site’s power: the readers.
We asked on our Facebook page earlier and now we’re asking here: What would you like to see on Albotas? Would you like a podcast? More comic book or anime features? More video? How about image galleries, link dumps, and reviews? We need answers! We’re listening!
What do you want guys?!?

WE ARE LAUNCHING A KICKSTARTER!!!
We’re launching a Kickstarter on March 1st to make this site fresher, radder, more… adequate. We want to film a regular series of minidocumentaries about passionate people creating fantastic things. We want to finally be able to afford travelling to all the press events we get invited to. We want to bring you video interviews with your favorite actors, directors, cartoon creators, game developers and more.
In a nutshell, we want to bring you more of the fresh content that brought you here in the first place, only on a much LARGER scale.
Not only that, but we want to turn this site into a legitimate business - a full-blown brand. Original videos, podcasts, livestreams, t-shirts, stickers, convention booths, the whole 9 yards.
Our goal is gonna’ be pretty big, but with over 120,000 Tumblr followers and around 1,000 new followers every day, we’re pretty sure we can make it happen. A project like this takes way more to finance than the site makes from ads in a month (which is about enough to buy a used sports game if we’re lucky).
So far we have some pretty amazing incentives planned. Check it.
PC/tablet/smartphone wallpaper pack with a buttload of wallpapers designed by some insanely talented artists like Byron Buslig, Maré Odomo, Erick Scarecrow, and former editor of Electronic Gaming Monthly/founder of Shawnimals, Shawn Smith!
An Albotas Papercraft figure designed by Mekazoo
A compilation of exclusive chiptune tracks by swell dudes like Ro-Bear and a bonus track by DJ Cutman
A hardcover book featuring some of our favorite Daily Graffiti pix from over the years
A hardcover book featuring some of our favorite geeky custom toys we’ve featured over the years
An exclusive resin figure of our Albotapus mascot produce by Shinbone Creative
We’ve been hard at work planning this project for close to three months now and we’d really like to see all the effort we’ve put into this site over the years pay off. This is our chance to create something truly unique and shine a spotlight on creators and projects that would otherwise go unnoticed. This is our chance to bring all corners of geek culture and creativity into one place like never before.
If you are an artist, brand, or chipmusician who would like to be involved with our Kickstarter backer incentives, please email brownkidd@albotas.
It would mean the world to us if you’d kindly share this post with your friends and loved ones through Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
Thanks and stay awesome,Robby “brownkidd” Weiss

5,000 Posts And Counting!!!
Technically, this is post #5,008. The actual 5,000th post is this one about synchronized dancing mascots in Japan.
Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our Tumblr followers for all the likes and reblogs. As of this writing we have 113,770 followers and we’re averaging around 5,000-7,000 new followers each week. Craziness!
Also, huge thanks to everyone who regularly chimes in in the comments section and on our Facebook page. You know who you are. Reblogs are always nice, but we really dig interacting with you guys on a more chatty level.
We have big things in store for 2013 and you’ve probably already noticed a few changes like the new addition to our staff and swanky new video content that we’ll be rolling out on the reg.
Even more awesomeness is on the way. Look out.
Thanks everyone. Albotas <3’s you.
Sincerely,
Robby “brownkidd” Weiss, your fearless editor-at-large.

AN INTRODUCTION
Hey everyone. My name is Box-Robots (Adam) and I am the newest member of Albotas. I am a filmmaker currently residing in Philly and I’d like to think that I am fairly involved in nerd culture. I really love film and video games and have occasionally followed comics and even some tabletop games like Heroclix. I am actually really into the chiptune music scene in Philly, which is blossoming. I am also really into pro wrestling, which may be surprising to some. I follow mainly independent wrestling companies that focus more on creative story-telling over dramatic soap opera style stories. I think wrestling is a unique art-form that is largely underrated.
Anyway, as a result of all of my interests, I feel that I will be able to provide a ton of really great content to Albotas. I have always been extremely committed to the stuff that I love and the nerd/geek subculture is no different. Due to my love for gaming, I ended up doing a 20 minute short documentary on a professional Starcraft II tournament that was featured on IGN. Since I was unable to play Starcraft II at a great level (I’m currently ranked as bronze, which is the lowest ranking one can attain.) I figured out a way to contribute to the scene. That is the main reason that I wanted to get involved with Albotas.
If you feel compelled, please follow me on Twitter @BoxRobots and check out my Vimeo.
I am excited to be a part of Albotas and can’t wait to help contribute to the geek culture that we all love.
Thanks for reading. Now on to the quality content.

A Short History of Video Games & the Compact Disk

I was watching an episode of Modern Marvels the other day. It was the “90’s Tech” episode which outlined those ten magical years of George Foreman Grills, digital cameras, and MiniDisks. With just two minutes left in the show, they finally mentioned videogames, specifically the PlayStation. The fine researchers at Modern Marvels claimed that Sony’s machine was the first console to play CDs. After picking my jaw up off the floor and splashing some cold Surge on my face, I turned to my Furby and said, “LOL wut?” Nothing against Sony - the PS1 and 2 are two of my favorite consoles - but the PS1 was not the first, second, or ninth to use CDs as a game format.

Click through to read about the several consoles that used CDs before the PlayStation’s launch.

Happy 4th of July!
Happy 4th, loyal Albotians! Sorry for the lack of posts the past few days. Your regularly scheduled awesomeness will return tomorrow. In the meantime: get fat on BBQ, play lots of video games, and try not to blow any body parts off with fireworks.

A Little Bit on the Jet Set Radio x Albotasquid Side: I was checking out the entries for Sega’s Jet Set Radio graffiti contest and noticed something black and blue and eight-legged. FamousAfterDeath submitted an entry featuring our Albotasquid. He didn’t win, but he totally should have.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Coming to Vita:

I thought I’d have to build a new $1,000 computer once PSO2 came out, but I guess I’ll just have to get a $250 portable instead. If it’s good, that is. So far it’s looking iffy. The video shows the game running about two frames per second. Sega has a year to work it out though - PSO2 for Vita won’t be out until 2013.

A Little Bit on the Triforce Cutting Board Side: I enjoy cutting things. With a knife. I’m way too hardcore to use a cutting board, but for the sake of argument, if I were to buy one, it would probably be this one with a Triforce in it. It would give me the courage, power, and wisdom to cut, chop, and dice like no other.

A Little Bit On The Petwear Side: Marvel is teaming up with PetSmart and Fetch… for cool pets! for a line of Marvel Super Hero toys, accessories, and apparel for dogs.
But what if your dogs don’t wanna’ be all dressed up in people clothes? More importantly… what if they’re DC fans!?

Albotas Review: The King of Fighters XIII

There’s a misconception that there was a drought in the world of 2D fighting games. Street Fighter IV brought the genre back into the mainstream, and a bunch of games rode the coattails: Marvel vs. Capcom 3, BlazBlu, and more. But the King of Fighters series has always been there. Unfortunately, the series gets constantly overlooked, and this will be especially criminal in the case of KoF XIII, which is a particularly great game.
Creamy gameplay and controls, staggeringly huge and powerful combos, K’ and Mai are back, amazing true 2D graphics, SNK cameos
Delay at beginning of online matches, ‘98 Iori is on-disk paid DLC, filler story per the usual

Help Us Fight Youth Homelessness!!!

A Little Bit On The “Do Whatever It Takes” Side: Not-so-fun Fact: each year in the U.S. and Canada over 2,000,000 kids wind up homeless. One out of eight kids are forced to leave their homes for whatever reason, and we’re of the sound opinion that this sucks.

To help raise money and awareness to combat youth homelessness, Virgin Mobile has launched DoWhateverItTakes.org where you can make an account and submit your own “whatever.” Your “whatever” is basically anything your friends/family/fans would really pay to see. You set a monetary goal, your peeps donate money towards that goal, and kabam! Youth homelessness: combatted.

Up top is YouTuber extraordinaire Wheezy Waiter pledging to build an igloo, stay in it overnight, and stream the whole grueling process over the internet. With only 12 days left, he’s already met over $7,000 of his $10,000 goal. Go support his shizz here.

Now, us being the awesome dudes that we are, we’d like to get in on this action and support a good cause. We’re always sharing links to cool games, toys, and other junk for you guys to buy, but there’s kids out there who don’t even have roofs over their heads. That’s whack, and we feel kind of like we should do something about it.

So…

What would you pay to see us do in the name of anti-youth-homelessness-ness? We could roam the streets giving away designer toys to strangers? I, your humble editor-at-large could shave a Tri-Force symbol into the back of my head? Play an entire season in a Madden NFL game (ugh!!!!)? Leave your suggestions in the comments section below.
