New ‘Man of Steel’ Trailer Actually Makes Me Give A Crap About The Movie

I grew up reading and obsessing over comics since the second grade, but as soon as I turned nine or ten, I stopped caring about most superhero comics. It was the 90’s and the whole “do-gooder in tights” thing was just boring and played out at the time.

If my mom gave me five bucks to pick out a comic while she was getting her nails did at the mall and I had to choose between Superman’s chisel-jawed, primp-haired exploits, or something as stylishly violent as Spawn or oversexed like Gen-13, I think you can guess nine-year-old wouldn’t pick.

Superman, like most superheroes, is at his most interesting when his origin story is being told. It’s the whole Heroes Journey thing. But after that story’s over and done with, it’s just a dude in tights fighting the same bad guys and saving the same people & planets from certain doom over and over again. Bleh.

But Man of Steel looks like it could very well be one of the best Superman origin stories - or at least the best one ever told on screen. I like that it seems to capture the human side of the story without seeming all mushy and Hallmark-esque.

You’re a father or a mother who raise a baby from space. It may seem silly on the surface, but, really, how do you deal with that sort of thing? And the same goes for Kal-El; you grow up thinking you’re just another normal kid, then all of a sudden you’re shooting lasers out of your eyeballs and bending crowbars like they were pipe-cleaner.

My favorite part about superhero stories isn’t so much when they’re punching bad guys in the face or using their fancy powers, but it’s watching how they emotionally deal with all the shit that gets thrown their way, and then use their powers to blow it all up, of course.

Here’s to hoping that this delivers on all fronts.

Things I Bought at Tampa Bay Comic Con

I had fun bragging and showing off cool stuff I bought last month at MegaCon, so I’ve decided to post all my purchases from this weekend’s Tampa Bay Comic Con for all to see. I’m pretty lucky to live in Florida where a con literally happens twice a month, so expect more bragging posts in the future. Like last time, I’ll explain how much I spent on the item, how much they run for, and if I saved any cash buying the items at a convention rather than the Internet or Amazon.

Top photo, Volumes 1-3 of Tank Girl: This was a really neat find. Those of you who are really into Gorillaz should already know what this is about. Tank Girl is a comic book series started by Jaime Hewlett (illustrator and co-creator of the Gorillaz) and Alan Martin (writer), revolving around an outlaw girl who drives a tank (obviously) and dates a mutant kangaroo. Sick stuff, great art, and for the mature. The second and third trades run at roughly $10 new on Amazon, while the first trade is around $30 new on Amazon. I got each of these trades for a lousy $2 each. I spent $6 in total for these in almost near mint condition! They were even bagged and boarded.

Second and third rows of photos, Iron Man 1963 Fine Pewter Original Statue: I honestly don’t understand how I got this little pewter statue for so fucking cheap, but I paid $5 for it from some guy with a table of just over nine different busts. The picture’s a little blurry due to my camera lens not being able to focus on the background comic of the bust, but it’s the issue of Tales of Suspense which Iron Man originated from as the backdrop. This tiny statue is under seven inches, came with a certificate of authenticity, and is running for $75 new on Amazon, with sellers asking for $50. Maybe the dude I bought it from had it for a while and it’s brought him bad luck or something, but I’m glad I picked this little guy up.

Forth row photo, Heavy 3PO: The Coleman Chronicles of Scud the Disposable Assassin: I read about this comic book last month and bought it this weekend because of that reason. I have no fucking recollection of why I was actually looking into this comic book in the first place, but this trade was only $4. The writer, Rob Schrab, apparently also directed all seasons of The Sarah Silverman Program, as well as directing a couple of episodes of Parks and Recreation, Children’s Hospital, and Community. According to Wikipedia: “The protagonist of the series is Scud, an average Heart Breaker Series 1373 model assassin. On his first mission, he is sent to kill Jeff, a rampaging female mutant with mousetraps for hands, an electrical plug for a head, and a squid for a belt.” This is probably why I was subliminally interested in the series in the first place…

Fifth row, comic books: I mean, no shit, right? I went to MegaCon this year to find comic books and I didn’t get anything I was really hoping to grab. At a small comic convention in Tampa though, I managed to grab various issues of Sandman, Swamp Thing, Lone Wolf and Cub, Human Target, Hellblazer, and some comic book by Alan Moore called Skizz. I grabbed over 50 issues of these various titles, with at least 20 of them being Swamp Thing issues from Vertigo, and another 20 being Sandman issues. I spent less than $50. I don’t really have to explain how good of a deal this is — the beautiful cover art of Sandman and Swamp Thing alone are worth $3 an issue, in my opinion.  I’m framing some of these this week and throwing them up on my wall.

So yeah, add a price of $15 admission to the actual convention and I think I spent around $90 tops for one day at the con. Not bad with what I grabbed.

Things I Bought At MegaCon: Day 3

Yo, I’m not gonna lie right now, I’m pretty fucking broke and upset with myself. I walked into the convention with $80 in my wallet and I don’t know where half of it went. This article isn’t helping me, either. This listing things I bought thing was a stupid idea.

First four rows of photos, comics: Obviously. I walked into this booth and say signs that read “Batman issues, 6 issues for $5.” Then I turned around and read “Marvel annual issues, 6 for $5.” Then I turned to the right and read four more signs along the same lines as the first two. Then I looked down and shit was literally oozing from my pant legs from excitement.

Most comic booths have a lot of shit they need to get rid of on Sunday night. Mainly because 1. They want last minute profit, and 2. They don’t want to carry boxes of shit that won’t sell back to their trucks. Usually on the final days of conventions, these booths do deep discounts on single issues/trade paper backs to lift some of that weight off. I would’ve been in heaven today if I hadn’t decided to spend all my fucking money on Friday and Saturday and saved it for comics today.

But I got some good steals. I spent $13 total for that stack of comics I got. The dealer sold me the comics at half price, meaning I was getting about 6 issues of random Batman, X-Men, Maxx, and other stuff for $2.50. Solid steals. I got the first issue of Ren & Stimpy and a couple of issues of Batman’s Knightfall storyline.

Fifth row, buttons: I don’t know what to say other than I really spent $5 on some fucking buttons.

Sixth row, the only thing I can say that was 100% worth it: a commission piece of Waka Flocka Flame. I asked this dude named Josh Hoye if he did commissions. He said yeah. I asked him if he could do something not really con-related. He said yeah. I said can you draw Waka Flocka Flame for me and ink it? He said yeah. So $30 later, here it is.

Friday I spent $76. Yesterday I spent $78. Today I spent $48. Tally that up and I spent a total of…$202…

But wait. Let’s count the food I paid for ($10 pizzas from Papa Johns that were less than 11 inches), parking, drinks, and change to hand to friends when they needed an extra buck or two. Now the total comes to about…

Three-hundred-fucking-dollars-are-you-fucking-kidding-me. I spent $300 at MegaCon. What the fuck.

Raven Added to Injustice: Gods Among Us

Let me go on a tangent. I’ll admit, I’ve been on a bit of a break from gaming. The recent Sim City and Alien: Colonial Marines fiascoes have simply made me sigh in frustration. However, there are great games out there that have me coming back to the medium I love so dearly. Games like Ni No Kuni, Bit.Trip.Runner.2 and Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm have sucked me back into gaming.

As a result, hype rarely gets to me. However, Injustice: Gods Among Us has me hyped. Surprisingly, I let this one go under my radar. I was curious when it was announced at last year’s E3, but then simply forgot about it.

Then news of my favorite Teen Titan being added to the game got me interested. Apparently GameTrailers accidentally uploaded the reveal trailer, which was originally supposed to air on GTTV. However, it was far too late.

There is a lot to be excited about here. A dark comic book fighting game from the creators of Mortal Kombat. On top of that is stellar design. It looks amazing. The detail in the environment, from the different depictions of the Joker and “Fuck Superman” graffiti to the awesome special moves, this game looks like the work of people who truly love what they do. It looks like a game for fans, but made by fans. It looks sincere.

That sort of thing pulls me back from the edges of gaming. I am incredibly excited for this.

More Injustice Hype: Solomon Grundy vs. Green Lantern

This game is getting cooler every week. Here’s a fight trailer for Solomon Grundy vs. Green Lantern. I’m really digging Solomon’s moves, and what Green Lantern does with his ring throughout the entire match is ridiculous and funny. Real stoked for this.

Game drops April 16.

Injustice: The More I See of This Game, The More I Need It

Look at this gameplay! Injustice: Gods Among Us is looking better and better with each gameplay video NetherRealm Studios releases.

Here we see Shazam and Flash duke it out, bouncing off of buildings (ridiculous, but fun to watch), air juggling each other, and using the environment as weaponry. I’m really digging each stage’s look, as well as the fluid movements of each character I’ve seen thus far.

April 16 couldn’t come sooner. Here’s to a solid DC Comics game release.

Mattel Reveals 1966 “Batman” Ken/Barbie Dolls

This is really cool, even if they are Ken and Barbie dolls. Mattel revealed these new photos of an upcoming toy release by the company, influenced by the old 1966 Batman television series, starring Adam West as Batman and Lee Meriwether as Catwoman. The dolls can be preordered at Barbie Collector for $35 a pop. The two dolls are shipping this June.

Nightmare Fuel: Greg Capullo’s ‘Batman’ Covers In GIF Form

If you missed issue #1 of Detective Comics, Joker has Dollmaker cut his face off because of super villain reasons. This is what comics will look like within the next 10 years when everything’s printed on GIF paper. Boobies in comics are ridiculous enough. Can you imagine them with GIF jiggle? Can’t. Wait.
