Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion) Draws Akira
Author of the Evangelion manga series, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, recently provided artwork for Japan’s Anime Busience magazine in celebration for Akira’s 25th anniversary. I couldn’t find any hi-res images anywhere, but it’s pretty neat to see Sadamoto draw Kaneda for the issue’s cover. Sick stuff.

Eva Unit-01 Custom Sneakers from Sekure D

True story. When I first saw Sekure D’s custom sneakers, my only thought was “How awesome would a pair of Evangelion customs be?” Well, here’s the answer. I want to put my feet in these so hard.

You Can (Not) Miss the Eva 3.0 Screening at NYCC ‘13
As a hardcore Evangelion fan, I am scared shitless to watch the Rebuild movies. I own all the DVDs, but I’m just too scared that Hideaki Anno pulled a Lucas to actually throw them in the DVD player. But I guess I’m going to have to watch 1.0 and 2.0 (oh, and 1.11) because 3.0 is being screened at NYCC on October 11.

Eva Unit-01 Custom Munny
I think I have a new favorite custom Munny. This tiny giant robot was created by Quicc for Kidrobot’s Munny Munth competition. I can’t stop staring at it.

The King of Monsters vs A God
I’d hate to see Tokyo after this battle. Artist Patrick Towers brings us a bone chilling match up that pits Godzilla vs EVA Unit-01.
I’d love to see this film. Even more interesting is the cultural contexts that are contained within each film. Godzilla originally dealt with the nuclear attacks and trying to come to terms with that. Evangelion draws a line from that in dealing with fate and the unpredictability of human life. One could argue that the mech genre was born in response to the Kaiju genre.
In any case, this is truly awesome art. Check out more of Patrick Towers’ work at DeviantArt and like him on Facebook.

Hello Unit-01

Check out this adorable Evangelion x Hello Kitty merch. The iPhone 5 case comes equipped with stickers of the Angels and other Eva themed stuff. They come in both black and white. They go for around 21 USD.

Then there is the Hello Kitty Unit-01. This thing is awesome and at around $23 USD, it would make an great addition to any EVA/Hello Kitty lover’s collection.

Now for EVA rebuild 3.33 to make it to US shores.

My Phone Is Protected, All’s Right with the World
I usually hate it when a franchise is whored out and merch is made left and right. But with one of my favorite things of all time, Neon Genesis: Evangelion, I can’t get enough of it. Stussy have collaborated with Gainax to create these classy iPhone 5 cases. Having the Stussy logo in Rei Blue (which should be an official Pantone color) was a great move.

Papercraft Eva Unit 01

The Human Instrumentality Project couldn’t engineer this amazing papercraft if they tried. Yes, it transforms into that tank, and yes, that’s an RX-78 in the background. Blasphemy! I kid - I love both Evangelion and Gundam (UC Gundam, that is).

Daily Graffiti: Freaking ENORMOUS Evangelion Street Art
Neon Genesis Evangelion is at the top of my list of anime that I need to stop being a lazy jerk about and just watch already. This piece by Deter, Owns, and Bandi makes me feel even worse about sleeping on what some refer to as the most influential anime series of all time.
Check out the super huge version here.

Daicon Opening Animations: A Love Letter to Japanese Pop Culture

Commentor Aaron M. Fitzwater alerted us to the awesomeness of the DAICON Opening Animations. These were amateur projects created by the people who would go on to form Gainax (Eva, FLCL, Gunbuster). The first one (1981) is a bit rough around the edges but the second one (1983) looks anything but amateur. As brownkidd himself said, “If Albotas could be summed up in one YouTube clip, it would be the DAICON IV opening.”

From Studio Ghibli And The Director Of ‘Evangelion’ Comes ‘Giant God Warrior’

Developed by Evangelion director Hideaki Anno and produced by Studio Ghibli (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo), Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru (Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo) is a short film inspired by the Giant God Warriors from Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Also worth mentioning is that there’s no computer generated effects here, it’s all traditional filmmaking techniques like miniatures and actual honest-to-goodness explosions.

You can check out the full short from July 7 to October 8 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo as part of their “Kanchō Anno Hideaki Tokusatsu Hakubutsukan” (Curator Hideaki Anno’s Special Effects Museum) exhibition.

Goodsmile Company will also be selling the Giant God Warrior Figma below exclusively at the exhibit, but commonfolk will be able to procure one online after October 8.

Cops have their guns. All’s right with the world.
I spilt some Honey Bunches of Oats on my lap this morning while watching the news. No, I wasn’t shocked by the fact that this cop is strangling someone protesting an anti-LGBT Tea Party rally. That stuff’s common enough. What caught my eye was the dude’s shirt. Yep. He’s wearing an Evangelion / Nerv shirt.
I think this guy and the dude on the cover of Every Time I Die’s new CD (who was in a similar situation) should have a protest. To the death.

You Can (Not) Turn Left: Evangelion GPS

You know, I don’t think I’d mind hearing “recalculating” every 20 seconds if it was Misato Katsuragi saying it. This awesome NERV-themed GPS receiver has a very cool GUI that looks like it came straight from Tokyo-3. It even displays your car as an Eva unit.
