Hands Down, The Best Marketing Ever

The FM Towns Marty was a Japanese console released by Fujitsu. It was able to play super accurate ports of arcade games and is highly collectible today. I’m not exactly in the market for one of these, but I like to keep tabs on the prices on eBay, just in case.

I was checking out the photos of one when I noticed some incredible copywriting on the chassis:

Kobeyashi Eats 12” Dominos Pizza in One Minute Flat

I guess this video is kind of old (by internet standards, of course), but whatever, we haven’t gotten around to posting it yet and I’m going to do so now.

So competitive eater Takeru Kobeyashi was apparently at a frattish Superbowl party and decided to eat a 12” Dominos pizza to himself in a minute flat. As you can see in the video, every bro in the room pulled out their camera phone to record their own footage, so if this one isn’t good enough for you I’m sure you can find at least 47 other angles to watch this from.

No matter the angle though, this shit is impressive and really cool/somewhat gross to watch.

Japan Sets World Record for Most Synchronized Dancing Mascots [VIDEO] Last weekend, 141 costumed mascots in Japan attempted to break the world record for the largest group of synchronized costumed dancing. And they did it! The group, called yuru-kyara, danced to “The Beard Dance,” by joke rock band, The Drifters, in Sasebo. For the group to qualify for the record, all members had to complete the dance with 95% accuracy. The first two tries failed to meet expectations, but the third attempt saw the costumed group succeed, and yuru-kyara broke the previously standing (I have no idea who else attempted this beforehand) Guinness World Record! When Japanese Pop Idols Go Metal

Here’s the video for “Take My Chance” by the Japanese all-girl hard rock group Doll$Boxx. They’re all super cute, can shred on their instruments like it’s nobody’s business, and their drummer can scream like a demon with a throat like a freight train. Definitely not your average J-Rock band.

Daicon Opening Animations: A Love Letter to Japanese Pop Culture

Commentor Aaron M. Fitzwater alerted us to the awesomeness of the DAICON Opening Animations. These were amateur projects created by the people who would go on to form Gainax (Eva, FLCL, Gunbuster). The first one (1981) is a bit rough around the edges but the second one (1983) looks anything but amateur. As brownkidd himself said, “If Albotas could be summed up in one YouTube clip, it would be the DAICON IV opening.”

A Little Bit on the Umbrella Side: There aren’t many things you can do to make an umbrella fun. But that didn’t stop a Japanese company from creating umbrellas with monkey and flying squirrel silhouettes on them. The tails of the animals flap around in the wind as if the wee critters are handing on for dear life. Depending on where you live, you might be able to buy one here. [Matomeno via notcot]

Cave Report: Akai Katana out May 16, Japanese Budget Version on June 14 The North American version of Cave’s most recent 360 port will be available on May 16, courtesy of Rising Star Games and Aksys. Akai Katana is Cave’s only horizontal shooter other than Progear no Arashi. At $40, it’s a steal. But now I’ve got a dilemma. There’s no way I’m paying the $75+ for the original Japanese release. But on June 14, the “Cave the Best” budget version is being released for the same price. Do I pay $40 for an American version or do I pay $40 (plus shipping) for the Japanese budget version? Where’s my Magic 8 Ball?

DoDonPachi: Saidaiohjou Gets a Trailer

Cave’s latest shooter hit arcades on Friday and if you’re wondering what it looks like, check out the above video. The big question for me is if this will get a 360 port. On one hand, I doubt it because there is usually a three-year gap between a Cave arcade release and a console port. So this may get ported to a next-gen console. On the other hand, Cave have heavily supported the 360. And if the 360 can handle Dai-Fukkatsu without a problem, it should be able to propertly represent Saidaiohjou.

A Little Bit on the Yasai Side: One thing Japan does particularly well is put awesome cartoon characters on everything. We’re stuck with that creep, The Green Giant, and they get all these cool mascots?

Monthly Revoltech Report (Feb. 2012)

Each month, Kaiyodo puts out a new super-articulated toy for its Yamaguchi series, usually based on a giant robot. This month’s giant robot is Eva Unit 04 from the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series.
