Konami Opens LA Studio

Kojima Productions recently opened up this lovely studio in LA to help develop Metal Gear Solid 5 and other upcoming games.

Kojma says,

As gaming takes the world stage as one of the greatest forms of entertainment, it’s only natural for us to expand our operations across the globe. And since Los Angeles is ground zero for the best studios, facilities and world-class talent, we are leaning on of these local resources to build an incredible team to create gaming experiences that are just as compelling as any film or television show.

How amazing would it be to work at such a beautiful location?

Scale Bust of Jehuty From Z.O.E.

Zone of the Enders is often viewed as Kojima’s most underrated work. I think it is probably one of the most underrated series of all time.
To celebrate the launch of the Z.O.E. HD Collection, Konami decided to build and display a scale model of Jehuty and put it on a building in Akihabara.
If only it would open up to reveal Zone of the Enders 3 inside of it.

A Little Bit on the Solid Shwag Side: While there’s no poster version of this awesome piece of propaganda, applicants to work on the next Metal Gear Solid game will receive this righteous shirt from Kojima Production’s GDC booth.

A Little Bit on the Uncle Sam Snake Side: Naked Snake (AKA Big Boss) wants you to develop the next Metal Gear Solid game. Kojima Productions will be at booth 1914 throughout GDC 2012 accepting applicants. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’ll be printing physical versions of this propaganda poster.

A Little Bit on the Bayonetta Side: Check out these replicas of Bayonetta’s guns at Platinum’s studio. The pic was snapped by Hideo Kojima on a visit, presumably to work on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

A Little Bit On The Metal Gear Side: Here’s a look at the upcoming Metal Gear Rex figure from threeA in collaboration with Kojima Productions. It’s huge, lights up, and even has removable armor. No word on price or release date, but we’ll keep you posted.

A Little Bit on the Platinum Side: A trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising has just leaked ahead of its VGA premiere. The video confirms the rumor that Platinum Games will be handling the game’s development from here on out. This is the best game-related news I’ve heard in a while. Platinum are clearly the leaders of Japanese action game developers and I can’t think of a better team to handle this Lightning Bolt Action.

Sdatcher Translated!
So I’m kind of late to the part with this one, but Suda51’s radio drama prequel to Hideo Kojima’s cult classic Snatcher has been translated from Japanese to English. So far, the translators are up to act 4 out of 6. Frickin’ sweet.

Monthly Revoltech Report (Oct. 2011)

Each month, Kaiyodo puts out a new super-articulated toy for its Yamaguchi series, usually based on a giant robot. Yesterday saw the launch of Himura Kenshin and Himura Battohsai from Rurouni Kenshin. The double release was Kaiyodo’s way of celebrating the series’ 15th anniversary.

Next month, we’ll get Eva Unit 05 from the Rebuild of Evangelion series of movies. This figure is massive - 160mm tall.

Next month will also see the release of Jehuty from Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner. The paint job is slightly different from the first Jehuty figure, but it comes with some different accessories. If you’ve put off buying a Jehuty figure this long, just wait until next month to get this slightly shinier version.

The last Revoltech figure of 2011 will be Anubis, also from ZOE 2. Someone better make an awesome stop-motion video of Jehuty and Anubis fighting to the death.

You saw all these in last month’s Monthly Revoltech Report, you say? I know, I know. But Kaiyodo didn’t announce any new figures since then - at least in the Yamaguchi series (the series that this report is meant to cover). To make up for it, here are some shots of Revoltech’s Pixar series, available on December 15, 2011. They’ve got Wall-E and a set of Finding Nemo characters.

Check back on the 15th of each month for Albotas’ monthly Revoltech report.

Zone of the Enders 3 Coming to 3DS?
Hideo Kojima has been asking his coworkers and Twitter followers what this image is. My first reaction was “It’s the Jehuty Revoltech figure. Duh.” Then I looked in the background. I wasn’t planning on getting a 3DS until the 3DS Lite comes out, but if this is true, it might happen a bit sooner.

Metal Gear Solid State Memory?
Apparently there was a Metal Gear Solid memory card. Unfortunately, it’s a tough find, even on eBay. I wonder what Psycho Mantis would say if he noticed this was in your console.

There Was Another Sons of Liberty Collectors’ Edition?

When Metal Gear Solid 2 came out in Japan, there was a limited edition that contained a reversible sleeve, an extra DVD, some sort of pamphlet insert, and a Solid Snake figure. Apparently, there was a limited edition in Europe, too. This one had a fancy metal box, plus a DVD packed with a making-of documentary and every piece of promotional video that existed for the game. And all we Americans got is a lousy Document of Metal Gear Solid 2.

MGS: Rising Not out for a Year and a Half
According to Destructoid, skeevsters Gamestop have listed Metal Gear Solid: Rising as being released on November 2, 20 freakin’ 12. That means we’ll only have five and a half weeks to play it before the apocalypse. One thing worth noting, though, is that 11/2/12 is a Friday. Games are almost always shipped on Tuesdays and sold on Wednesdays, so this could just be a placeholder date.

Zone of the Enders gets plastic
Finally! Over the years, we’ve gotten Gundam, Eva, Virtual On, and all sorts of other mecha toys. But for some reason there have never been figures based on the Orbital Frames from Zone of the Enders. Revoltech will take care of that, though. The makers of some of the most articulate and durable mid-priced toys will be making a figure based on Jehuty. Now it’s only a matter of time before the next sequel, right? Right?!
