SONY ANNOUNCES PROJECT MORPHEUS VIRTUAL REALITY HELMET FOR PS4
Anolog sticks, built-in rumble, motion control - pfft! These are all things of the past. Taking a cue from Oculus Rift which has found a niche audience among PC gamers, Sony will be rolling out their own VR unit.

From Kotaku:

Part of the announcement involved footage of a VR God of War, PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida saying “When I looked down, I saw my body was that of Kratos. That was an empowering experience.”

This definitely has potential, but I wonder if it will take off and become a huge mainstream hit like other gaming peripherals similar to the hype and success of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and the initial Wii launch. As is the case with any new piece of gaming hardware, it all depends if the games will be good enough to warrant the purchase/risk of your roommates throwing things at you/punching you in the crotch while you’re wearing one of these things.
How long do you think it’ll take for someone to mod the VR goggles into a Virtual Boy?

ESC-Toy Launching Last of Us Line
Having previously collaborated with Naughty Dog on the Nathan Drake vinyl figure, ESC-Toy and Erick Scarecrow will be producing collectibles based on the developers enormous hit, The Last of Us. Joel and Ellie are sure to show up, but who else will be featured in this line? Infected? Bill?! I really hope there’s a Bill figure, complete with a Bears Magazine accessory.

Venom and Sinister Six Spinoff Movies Confirmed
Three days ago I posted 9 thoughts on a superhero movies in a post-Avengers film industry. I touched on how everything needs to be hype now if any other studio wants to compete with Marvel. Funny that three days later, Sony announces Venom and Sinister Six are getting their own spinoff movies.
Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddardwill work together on overseeing the “developing story over several films” according to Sony. They “have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films,” and the team will be working alongside Marc Webb, and producersAvi Arad and Matt Tolmach.
Kurtzman, Orci, and Solomon will write Venom, with Kurtzman directing. Goddard will write and maybe direct Sinister Six,though I would much rather see him take on Venom since he also did Cabin in the Woods, and that monster would be great to see from Goddard.

PlayStation 4 Finally Bundled With PS Vita
In the United Kingdom, at least. MCVUK reported that Sony will indeed be bundling the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita together, while VideoGamer.com posted an image from MCV, proving that Sony has this lined up for this December. No word on pricing for the UK and absolutely no word on this bundle coming to the US at the moment, but I’m sure we’ll see it soon.

Killzone: Shadow Fall - The Albotas Review
On a complete whim I decided to pick up a PlayStation 4 on launch day. I typically never get systems on launch day because their libraries either consist of updated ports or first party exclusives that look amazing, but are just kind of okay in terms of gameplay. Killzone: Shadow Fall fits into that second category.

AWESOME
The graphics. The graphics on this game are bonkers and make this game a showpiece that perfectly demonstrate what the PS4 is capable of.
Seamless transitions. In one level you’ll go from being flown into a beautiful futuristic city on an aircraft, to that city being reduced to burning rubble while all heck breaks loose, to being flown across the city to a railway transit system in the sky. It’s all done in a very seamless way and loading screens are disguised as dialogue sequences when flying from one place to another.
Level design. These levels are HUGE. There’s futuristic ghetto slums reminiscent of Blade Runner which absurdly tall steel towers and neon lights reflecting on the wet streets. There’s apocalyptic desert wastelands where decaying stone buildings lay collapsed while the sun casts lens blooms every which way. I kind of want an “Art of Killzone: Shadow Fall” book.
The OWL Drone. This is a little flying robot dude that you control with the PS4’s all new touch pad. He has 4 modes: shoot things, hack things/EMP things, turn into a shield, or turn into a zipline. It’s sort of a gimmick, but it helps spice up the stale run-of-the-mill FPS formula.
The less FPS-y parts. For a mediocre FPS, this game deserves some credit for trying to mix things up with stealth, anti-gravity parts (one was a particularly challenging escort mission of sorts), summoning giant flying robot things to kill waves of enemies, hacking/controlling robot spiders, and ordering an unkillable sniper with unlimited ammo to take dudes out while you sneak around and get shit done.
After the credits. There’s a mid-credits mission that I really wanted more of. Rather than play the main protagonist, you play a completely different character with a different set of skills. It’s a stealth mission where your objective is to assassinate someone, but first you need to go around disabling security cameras. A whole game of just that with a little generic FPS action probably would have been way more enjoyable, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some sort of DLC expanding on the concept was made available at some point.
NOT AWESOME
Forgettable story. I seriously barely remember what it was about. The Vektans are the good guys and they let the Hellghast live on their planet after they messed up the Hellghast planet in Killzone 3, but they’re both still at war for some reason.
The falling parts. There are a few chapters that have you navigate while falling. You will die numerous times. Not because these sequences are hard, but because the controls for them are terrible.
The text is absurdly small. Even on my 47” flatscreen I have to get up from my sofa to read mission objectives. I felt like I needed binoculars.
Multiplayer leaves a bit to be desired. Where to even begin. The walls in almost every level are the shame shade of metallic grey as the character models, so it’s almost impossible to see anyone, not all multiplayer modes and loadouts are made available from the start and it’s unclear how to unlock them, and some of the levels simply seem more like terrain than actual well-though-out levels for a multplayer FPS.
VERDICT
As a tech demo to show off the power of the PS4 to your friends, Killzone: Shadow Fall is amazing, however, while it may have gorgeous next gen graphics and gimmicky-but-fun next gen controls, it fails to deliver next gen storytelling or next gen gameplay. It isn’t a terrible game by any stretch, but it isn’t remarkable either, just solid. If you own a shiny new PS4 and want to be blown away by some top-notch visuals, this game is quite the spectacle to behold.

Play As Classic Snake in MGS V: Ground Zeroes

This new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes reveals an exclusive PlayStation mission titled “Deja Vu,” in which players can play as the original classic Snake. Completely untouched by next-gen graphics, the original Snake looks hilarious and adds a nice exclusive feature to those with Sony consoles.

Brace Yourselves: A New PaRappa Game Is Coming. Maybe.
Some dude on NeoGAF who could either be an anonymous lonely forum nerd yearning for attention or an actual person close to the video game industry (possibly both?) felt the need to brag in a post about how he got drunk with some game industry friends in super hip San Francisco. Amidst the drunken shmoozery, a Sony PR guy allegedly “got pretty shit tanked” and “spilled the beans that a new Parappa the Rappa [sic] is being worked on with really slick HD illustrations and really cool animation that totally captures the spirit of the original. Apparently Queasy Games and the Media Molecule are teaming up for this, and it uses some of the tech from Tearaway.”
I think the main takeaway from all this is that most nerds suck at holding their liquor and shouldn’t be trusted with industry secrets and a new PaRappa game would be effing awesome.
And to any important video game PR companies who probably aren’t reading this, I’m the king of being drunk. I would never spill any of your beans, and it would be an honor to have you send me to San Francisco so that I may drink alcohol and talk about video games with other people who are also drinking alcohol. Thank you.

Sony has unveiled a new line of 3-in-1 Walkman headphones dubbed the WH series. Available in 16GB (model NWZ-WH505) and 4GB (model NWZ-WH303) flavors, both sets can pump out an hour of tunes on a three minute quick charge, 20 hours on a full charge, feature multiple sound modes, and can be turned into speakers that can crank out jams from the built-in MP3 player. And the best part: you can plug them into another device like your smartphone or tablet via headphone jack, so you’re not restrained to just the built-in dealy. Pretty sweet.
No word on price or release date, but you can check the full specs and info on Sony Eruope’s press site.

5 Reasons We’re Pumped For Sony’s Vita TV
Earlier this week Sony announced a home console version of the PS Vita dubbed the PS Vita TV releasing November 14 in Japan for just $100, or $150 for the system, a DualShock 3, and 8GB memory card. The announcement baffled some and enraged others, but here’s 5 reasons to be just plain pumped.

1. IT’S A VITA FOR YOUR WHOLE LIVING ROOM
Well, duh, but come on, how awesome is Gravity Rush gonna’ look on a giant flat screen? Plus, there’s a whole demographic of gamers who refuse to purchase handhelds because they’d rather be immersed in the larger-than-life presentation that only a living room television set up can provide. No matter how fantastic a handheld game is, it could always be improved by a giant TV set and sick surround sound.

2. MAD PORTABLE
Kind of ironic considering the Vita TV is a home console version of a portable gaming device, but just think about it. Hook one of these bad boys up to your hotel room TV, and if the hotel has WiFi, you can use Netflix! Breaking Bad is way more enjoyable when you aren’t squinting at a laptop screen to watch it.

3. REMOTE PLAY
The Vita TV will feature both PS3 and PS4 remote play. Say your significant other is deep into an all-day-long Say Yes To The Dress marathon and doesn’t plan on giving up the TV any time soon. Just hook your Vita TV up to a nearby computer monitor or TV somewhere else in the house to instantly get your game on. Much easier than actually lugging a PS3 or PS4 room to room.

4. PS1 MULTIPLAYER SUPPORT
One great thing about the PSP and PS Vita has always been the amount of PS1 Classics available to download. Sadly, there’s no multiplayer support for those oldschool games on Sony’s handhelds. Luckily, the Vita TV supports up to two DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS controllers which means you and a friend can relive the good old days with titles like Twisted Metal 2, Crash Team Racing, Jet Moto, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and more. Perfect for someone who doesn’t already own a PS3, and if you do have a PS3, you can always keep one of these hooked up to another TV in the house like the bedroom. Always nice to wind down a long day with some classics from gaming’s glory days.

5. THE MORE THE MERRIER
This could be the entry level console that gets more people interested in playing video games. This is going to open up a buttload of great games to a whole new slew of people who either don’t own a console at all, or were intrigued by the Vita, but couldn’t see themselves investing in one for whatever reason. Depending on the success of Vita TV, it could potentially lead to more interest from developers, more support from publisher, and not just more games for the system, but better ones.

Sony “SmartShot” Digital Lenses for iOS & Android Cameras
Sony is about to turn your your smartphone into a photo-snapping beast with their new line of snap-on lenses for iOS and Android devices.

Sony is expanding their CyberShot line into smartphone territory with these gnarly little lenses that attach onto your phone. Notice in the pic above how the Sony lens doesn’t actually cover the lens of the phone. That’s because these lenses have all the camera guts built it, but they’re controlled via the Sony PlayMemories App for your phone.
Sony will be launching two models: the DSc-QX10 featuring 18 megapixel CMOS image sensor and f/3.3-5.9 lens, and the more heavy-duty DSC-QX100 rocking a 20.2 megapixel Exmor R image sensor and Carl Zeiss f/1.8-4.9 glass.
Both have zoom, focus, full image stabilization, exposure & white balance control, and can record HD video at 1080/30p. The QX10 will be $250 and the QX100 will be $450. No word yet on an official release date, but we’ll keep you posted.

Dat battery gauge!
