CITE YOUR F*CKING SOURCES
If you’re reading this and write for a high-traffic blog, this post is for you.
If you happen to come across a post here on Albotas that you’d like to share with your readers, LINKING BACK TO US MATTERS! If something is posted here that doesn’t have a (via) link at the bottom, that means we either got the info from a press release or social media, or we searched and dug through the far reaches of the Internets to find awesome original content for our readers. And we ALWAYS check to make sure that what we think MIGHT be original content hasn’t actually been posted somewhere else on the blogosphere first.
Now, obviously most bloggers within our same niche are tuned into a lot of the same news channels as us, so it’s inevitable that other sites might come across the same cool things and share them with their readers. But every now and then, there are telltale signs of shenanigans like when we send our link as a news tip to a site & they run the story without credit. Or when we find a cool picture, dig deeper to learn the story behind the picture which leads to more pictures from more sources, then cite all those sources in a post, only to have bigger blog whose staff members follow us on social networks post the same story, pictures, and links a few days later.
Albotas has been around for nearly seven years. We’re no strangers to having our content go uncredited. This is the digital Wild West. It happens. Some people just forget or are complete jerks. But just remember, we don’t get paid for this. The ads on this site make about enough money to buy a candy bar each month. Maybe one day I can have this site be my full-time job (although, nearly 7 years later and it still hasn’t happened), but until then, it’s the links from the big sites that keep more awesome new readers coming in.
Besides, if you’re getting paid to write for a high-traffic site, you should really know better anyway.
(And seriously, Albotas READERS ARE FREAKING AWESOME! Every now and then I get an email from one of you guys telling me how much you love the site and our videos. It means more than you could ever possibly imagine!)

WE ARE LAUNCHING A KICKSTARTER!!!
We’re launching a Kickstarter on March 1st to make this site fresher, radder, more… adequate. We want to film a regular series of minidocumentaries about passionate people creating fantastic things. We want to finally be able to afford travelling to all the press events we get invited to. We want to bring you video interviews with your favorite actors, directors, cartoon creators, game developers and more.
In a nutshell, we want to bring you more of the fresh content that brought you here in the first place, only on a much LARGER scale.
Not only that, but we want to turn this site into a legitimate business - a full-blown brand. Original videos, podcasts, livestreams, t-shirts, stickers, convention booths, the whole 9 yards.
Our goal is gonna’ be pretty big, but with over 120,000 Tumblr followers and around 1,000 new followers every day, we’re pretty sure we can make it happen. A project like this takes way more to finance than the site makes from ads in a month (which is about enough to buy a used sports game if we’re lucky).
So far we have some pretty amazing incentives planned. Check it.
PC/tablet/smartphone wallpaper pack with a buttload of wallpapers designed by some insanely talented artists like Byron Buslig, Maré Odomo, Erick Scarecrow, and former editor of Electronic Gaming Monthly/founder of Shawnimals, Shawn Smith!
An Albotas Papercraft figure designed by Mekazoo
A compilation of exclusive chiptune tracks by swell dudes like Ro-Bear and a bonus track by DJ Cutman
A hardcover book featuring some of our favorite Daily Graffiti pix from over the years
A hardcover book featuring some of our favorite geeky custom toys we’ve featured over the years
An exclusive resin figure of our Albotapus mascot produce by Shinbone Creative
We’ve been hard at work planning this project for close to three months now and we’d really like to see all the effort we’ve put into this site over the years pay off. This is our chance to create something truly unique and shine a spotlight on creators and projects that would otherwise go unnoticed. This is our chance to bring all corners of geek culture and creativity into one place like never before.
If you are an artist, brand, or chipmusician who would like to be involved with our Kickstarter backer incentives, please email brownkidd@albotas.
It would mean the world to us if you’d kindly share this post with your friends and loved ones through Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
Thanks and stay awesome,Robby “brownkidd” Weiss

5,000 Posts And Counting!!!
Technically, this is post #5,008. The actual 5,000th post is this one about synchronized dancing mascots in Japan.
Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our Tumblr followers for all the likes and reblogs. As of this writing we have 113,770 followers and we’re averaging around 5,000-7,000 new followers each week. Craziness!
Also, huge thanks to everyone who regularly chimes in in the comments section and on our Facebook page. You know who you are. Reblogs are always nice, but we really dig interacting with you guys on a more chatty level.
We have big things in store for 2013 and you’ve probably already noticed a few changes like the new addition to our staff and swanky new video content that we’ll be rolling out on the reg.
Even more awesomeness is on the way. Look out.
Thanks everyone. Albotas <3’s you.
Sincerely,
Robby “brownkidd” Weiss, your fearless editor-at-large.

blogLIFE: The Perks Of Being A Semi-Popular Geek Lifestyle Blogger

Sometimes brands want to reach a certain audience. Depending on how specific the audience is, big brands occasionally turn to smaller blogs for help. For the past year I’ve been working as a brand ambassador for Virgin Mobile doing simple things like sharing tweets on twitter, Facebook posts, and the occasional write-up on Albotas.com.

Virgin invited myself and 24 other bloggers (dubbed the Virgin Mobile 25) to Maryland for their annual FreeFest music festival, a free day-long music fest that asks attendees to donate at least $10 to The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s initiative to address youth homelessness.

It’s a fantastic cause, and the lineup was awesome. I had the pleasure of being part of last year’s VM25 and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this year kicked last year’s ass to the moon and back. Incredible experience. Incredible people. Thank you Virgin Mobile and Mekanism for bringing me on board.

blogLIFE: The Albotas.com Story

This is the first of many in a series of short vlogumentaries depicting the ins and outs and ups and downs of trying to make a living as a geek culture blogger. Told from the perspective of Albotas.com founder Robby “brownkidd” Weiss, blogLIFE is a quest for the American dream in the wild frontier known as the blogosphere. Huge thanks to the rad peeps over at Sony who made this possible by donating an Alpha NEX-F3 to our cause.

A Little Bit On Our New Look
As some of you may have noticed over the weekend, we change up the site layout. We’ve received several notices from you guys about problems with the previous theme’s loading issues, so we hope this new theme remedies the situation.
Along with the new look, we’re also changing up our posting style to deliver more bit-sized nuggets of awesome each day. Don’t worry, we’ll also be doing some lengthy editorial stuff as well which will be indicated by it’s bigness on the site’s front page - much like this very post.
We’re still having a problem with getting the Disqus comments to show up correctly, so if any web-savvy readers wanna’ help us out, we’re using the Stacky 5 theme and really have no clue how to properly tweak it. Email brownkidd@albotas.com if you feel like lending a hand.
Anywho, hope you all dig the site’s new layout and direction. We have some killer original content lined up for the future. In the meantime, stay tuned and stay awesome!

VloggityBlog: A Little Bit On The Awesome Life

Another installment of the Albotas behind-the-scenes video blogs. This one is from yesterday. I wanted to have it up lat night, but my comp is slow and it took about 9 hours to render.

Still not sure what to name this thing. Leave comments. Subscribe. Stuff. Swag. Open up yo’ mouth.

A Vlog About Blogging: Albotas Behind The Scenes

I wanted to have this up yesterday, but it took my computer exactly 756 minutes to render the complete video before I uploaded it to YouTube. Future videos will be way shorter since I got the general introduction out of the way.

This is basically a look into how I run the site, promote it, find news, etc. If anything, I’ll at least be able to look back on these videos and see how the site progresses.

Please leave comments, subscribe on YouTube, and leave video replies to be featured on a future episode!
