Monday Morning Box Art: Alisia Dragoon
Monday mornings suck. Here’s some box art to make it better.
This week, we’re going with the Japanese version of Alisia Dragoon. The 1992 action / platformer was developed by Game Arts (of Lunar and Grandia fame) with a little help from Gainax (of Evangelion, Gunbuster, FLCL, and Gurren Lagan fame). You play as Alisia and use some crazy lightning-bolt action to make your way through eight levels. It’s probably one of the more overlooked Genesis / Mega Drive games, but you can pick it up for around $10 or $20 loose.

Yes, Mega Man was on the Genesis
There’s been a Genesis-styled chiptune cover of some Mega Man music making the rounds on the Internet, which has been making people ask, “What if Mega Man was released on the Genesis?” Well, it was! Rockman: Mega World was released in late ‘94 for the Mega Drive in Japan and was released in ‘95 as Mega Man: The Wily Wars in Europe and Brazil.
The game was an upgraded compilation of the first three Mega Man games. It never received a physical release in the US, but was available on Sega Channel, the satellite service.
All versions of the game are collectible, going for at least $250. Don’t be fooled though. Any physical copy you see with Genesis branding is a reproduction and is worth about $40, not the three digit prices you’ll see on eBay.

Albotas Review - Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA

I was expecting some light reading. But when my review copy of Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA showed up on my doorstep, I found a text book. The nearly 400 page book details every step of Sega’s foray into the console industry, both in America and abroad. The amount of information in this book is staggering. And even though you know how Sega’s fate unfolds, you’re still rooting for them the entire time.

Hit the link for our full review of Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA.

Sega Genesis Shock Collar Mod
A couple of friends patched some Genesis games to work with a shock collar mod that they designed. When they get hit in the game, the collar gives them a nice zap. This is the future of gaming, kids.

MegaDrive-Themed Nintendo Handhelds Are Beautiful Blasphemy

A part of me dies every time I see Sonic on a Nintendo console. As Hank Hill might say, “That’s just not right. That’s like a pretty girl with short hair.” But I can’t deny the awesomeness of these customized Nintendo handhelds.

Streets of Rage 2 For Free !
You read that right my peoples! One of the greatest, if not greatest beat’em ups Streets of Rage 2 for iOS is FREE for today. So get on them iPhones or iPads (if you don’t mind scaling) and download the hell out of this. Rock some headphones too and listen to my favorite video game soundtrack.

Radical 16-Bit Music Video Pays Homage to the Sega Genesis

This is “My Mega Drive” by 2080, a righteous little love letter to the Sega Genesis (known as the Sega Mega Drive outside the U.S.) in the form of a catchy chiptune song and 16-bit music video.

Aside from references to great games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Gunstar Heroes, there’s some slick-yet-subtle animation sequences like when the protagonist pushes up his glasses and pumps up his kicks before unleashing huge attacks.

This needs to be a game NOW because I’d play it in a heartbeat.

Selected Sonic Game 50% Off on XBLA
That was a pretty descriptive title, if I do say so myself, so I don’t have much to say here. Go on Xbox Live and get some Sonic games for cheap in celebration of his 20th anniversary. The sale runs until July 28.

Sonic 20th Anniversary OST Has Cleared Act 1
It sounds like our spiky blue friend will be dropping the needle later this year when SEGA releases a compilation soundtrack to celebrate Sonic’s 20th anniversary. According to The Daily DL, the CD will feature the music from both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as well as some rarities. It has only been announced for Japan, so hopefully Play-Asia and YesAsia.com will have plenty of FM synthesis to go around.

What Is It They Say About a Fool and His Money?
You’ve got to love eBay, the magical land where things that don’t exist somehow exist. Take for example this Genesis copy of Mega Man: The Wily Wars. “But physical copies of that game only came out for the European and Japanese Mega Drive systems,” you say. Well, that fact hasn’t stopped 17 people (as of May 3) from bidding on the Genesis artifice.

Streets of Rage: The Book
All sorts of videogames are getting the novelization treatment. I remember getting some Resident Evil books as a kid, but now there are novels based in the worlds of Halo, Mass Effects, Assassin’s Creed, and more. I was on the subway the other day when I did a double-take and noticed the guy next to me was reading a book called Streets of Rage. I could hardly contain myself. Of course, it’s not based on Sega’s early ’90s beat ‘em ups. Rather, it’s about a Boston crime boss named Johnny “Bad Seed” Brown. That name must have taken days to come up with.

Sonic cups let you drink out of cups
There was an amazing lack of Sonic merch during the ’90s, and now most of the merch features the newer, lankier Sonic. These pint glasses bring it way back to the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles era though. And they’re only $23 at Spencer’s. They’re sold out (for now) online, so you might have to go to the mall to pick up a set.

Sonic’s chaos emeralds are bright, shiny
These chaos emerald replicas look pretty awesome. I was hoping there would be some info on how to make them, but the source says that they mostly came from eBay.
Note: Thanks to our reader, Ashley, who has pointed out that these are available at Michael’s and other arts&crafts stores!
