I’ve never played a Monster Hunter game in my life. Always wanted to, but they just seem too huge and daunting. After checking out a sample of the 60-page Monster Hunter Beginner’s Guide from Culty, I’m 100% prepared to begin ignoring my loved ones and adult responsibilities to dive into the epic world of Monster Hunter.
The Monster Hunter Beginner’s Guide was written by Roy Blakely from Kotowari.org and is chock full of adorable art by Sarah O’Donnell, creator of Rumbirds. Together they host the podcast My Fair Hunter. Check them out because they do pretty rad things.
Recently Atlus announced their first HD title, Catherine, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The talent in charge of this project is the same staff who worked on the critically acclaimed Persona titles of the last generation:
Producer/Game Director: Hoshino Katsura
Character Designer: Shigenori Soejima
Composer: Shoji Meguro
So let’s get into what we know about the game:
The main character is a salaryman named Vincent. At the time the game begins, Vincent will just have gotten out of a relationship with his girlfriend who left him for cheating on her — turns out he also got her pregnant which further complicates matters. Vincent doesn’t really care about work or finding another girl. He is content to drift through a rather depressing life.
This is when he meets Catherine. She is a sexually aggressive blond, blue-eyed girl with certain… features that turn heads. The two get very close, quickly, and soon Vincent begins having nightmares in which he is forced to climb a never-ending staircase — with a bunch of sheep, some of which wear neckties. To avoid going back into his dreams, Vincent becomes something of an insomniac.
Nothing is known about the game’s battle system at this time, but the title is described as an action adventure game, as opposed to the usual RPG genre Atlus is know for. Catherine also has some adult moments which you may notice in the game’s steamy trailer.
The game will be out in Japan this winter and the developers say they are about 80% done at the moment. You can check out the official website for Catherine here. It is pretty bare, however, since it just opened today. I expect great things from Atlus’s first HD title, and from what I have seen of the game I don’t think I will be let down!

He uses his elementary grasp of the Japanese language to translate news which makes up most of the site’s content. The site is a little over two years old.
