Android S3 Confirmed for End of Q3

Andrew Bell has just announced that the third series of Android Mini Collectibles will be shipping by the end of September. Originally slated for Q2, the delay is mostly due to a redesigned arm that lets you pose robo-appendage any which way. Very cool.

And if you happen to be in Brooklyn, drop by The Cotton Candy Machine to check out some of Andrew’s other work during the Other Mother Brothers art show.

Ever wonder how the Android Mini Collectibles project got its start? Check out our interview featuring Andrew and yours truly.

How It’s Made: Swiss Cheese Munny

Carson Catlin customized [alliteration unintentional] a Mini Munny not just with paint, but with a heat gun, Dremel and, X-acto knife. The result was this trippy piece and a stop-mo video.

DIY Pocket Pork Dumpling
If you’ve always wanted a leopard print Pocket Pork Dumpling, today is your day. Shawnimals now offers blank versions of their recently released vinyl toy. There are two kinds - one with eyes and one without. I picked one up at MyPlasticHeart over the weekend (along with a mini canvas from Shawnimal himself) and they’re pretty darn nice. Time to paint it like a Dragon Quest slime.

Urban Outfitters x Kidrobot Live Sketch Recap

I went to Urban Outfitters’ Live Sketch event last week and it was actually pretty fun. There weren’t a whole lot of people, and strangely enough, none of them had ever customized a toy before. We were given Kidrobot-branded markers but no paint, probably so that things didn’t get messy. I had never used the markers before and was pleasantly surprised. As expected, the ink was easy to smudge and left noticeable streaks, but the colors were vibrant. At the end of the event, one person won a Mega Munny. Unfortunately, he admitted that he was going to sell it. Oh well. Check out the results above.

There weren’t any artists at the Cambridge, MA event, but Shawnimal, Julie West, and Marka27 were at other locations. Their custom Munnys are available on Urban’s site.

New Blank 7-inchers and Mega Munnys from Kidrobot

There’s some exciting news for the customizing scene. Kidrobot will be releasing 7-inch versions of their Trikky, Raffi, and Foomy platform toys on April 12. That’s three more inches than the current “mini” versions. Each comes with one blank accessory and a “Hello, My Name Is” card. If you grab one of these and do something neat-o, email us some photos.

The other news is big and glossy. Possibly due to the success of the Glossy Smorkin’ Labbits, Kidrobot are releasing glossy versions of the 18-inch Mega Munny. The Glossy Mega Munnys will run $250, which is $50 more than the standard matte finish. These look awesome, and according to Kidrobot, you can customize these with dry-erase markers and wipe ‘em clean once you want to try something new. If these can be truly wiped clean - with no permanent coloring or unglossifying - I might just buy one.

A Little Bit on the MAD Side: The 4-foot Dunny: an elusive beast. Few have had the courage to paint the behemoth bunny, but you can watch MAD paint one at Foxwoods Casino this Friday and Saturday if you live anywhere near Connecticut. MAD will also be signing and taking pictures. Bring some cash though because he can only sign stuff you buy at his merch table.
