Neo•Geo X Getting More Games Including Blazing Star
I admit it. I was wrong. I never thought the Neo•Geo X would get any more games. But a big list of games on a new compilation called Neo Geo X Classics Vol I-V has just been released. (It’s unclear if these are sold all together or as different bundles.) Here it is:
Art of Fighting 3
Blazing Star (yes!)
Breakers Revenge (yes!)
Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves (yes!)
Kizuna Encounter (yes!)
King of Fighters ‘96
Last Blade 2
Metal Slug 2
Samurai Showdown 3
Savage Rein
Sengoku
Shock Troopers
Super Sidekicks 3
Top Hunter
World Heroes Jet
There’s still not enough here for me to justify a purchase of the portable. Most of these games are already available as ports, re-releases and compilations. The only one I’m dying to play is Blazing Star (since the iOS port is god awful. Either way, it’s good to see that this thing is actually being supported.

Yes, Mega Man was on the Genesis
There’s been a Genesis-styled chiptune cover of some Mega Man music making the rounds on the Internet, which has been making people ask, “What if Mega Man was released on the Genesis?” Well, it was! Rockman: Mega World was released in late ‘94 for the Mega Drive in Japan and was released in ‘95 as Mega Man: The Wily Wars in Europe and Brazil.
The game was an upgraded compilation of the first three Mega Man games. It never received a physical release in the US, but was available on Sega Channel, the satellite service.
All versions of the game are collectible, going for at least $250. Don’t be fooled though. Any physical copy you see with Genesis branding is a reproduction and is worth about $40, not the three digit prices you’ll see on eBay.

Neo•Geo X Supports 4:3 Aspect Ratio

One of my big concerns about the upcoming Neo•Geo X handheld is that previews had shown games running in a stretched 16:9 aspect ratio rather than the Neo’s native 4:3. According to Gamespot’s video (above) the aspect ratio can be toggled between letterbox and widescreen with a button. Phew!

Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The little Hawaiian company that brought us Sonic, NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon, Virtual-On, and more are now but a notch above shovelware publishers. I clearly remember the day when Sega announced they were getting out of the hardware game. My dad told me after hearing it on the morning news. I nearly threw up into my bowl of Cheerios.
If you’re interested in the history of Service Games, check out Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA. While I’d usually roll my eyes at something like this, the author is the curator of Eidolon’s Inn, an extensive source of Sega info, so he knows his Alex Kidd from his Rent A Hero.
Get it for $16 at Amazon.

Fez Is Nigh

I’ve owned a Fez shirt for over two years now. The wait is becoming unbearable and this trailer (with awesome music) isn’t helping much. I don’t think this music was on the Fez EP, so hopefully a full soundtrack comes out at some point.

A Little Bit on the Neo-Geo Side: Up for grabs on eBay is an oh-so-close-to-complete collection of the 149-game Neo-Geo MVS library. The lot includes every game except for Mr. Do and comes with shockboxes (homemade MVS cartridge holders and art inserts) as well as mainboards and even some posters. You’ll have to bring your own cab though.

A Little Bit on the Cave In Side: This Cave In poster rocks, man. It’s from way back in their Until Your Heart Stops days. Two of my favorite things: metal / hardcore and old games.

Gold Famicom Disks Are High Class
I don’t usually like stuff that’s gold-colored, but these super-rare Famicom Disk System games look amazing. And they’ve probably got a price to match. Only an estimated 10,000 were made and a similar disk is going for $600 on eBay. They were sent out at random to some of the people who attended the Famicom Golf Tournament. I guess you didn’t even have to win to get an awesome prize. Sweet.

Import Review: Game Center CX 2

Game Center CX 2 is the Japan-only follow up to Retro Game Challenge on the Nintendo DS. It’s a retro-fest of fun that will keep you playing like you did as a kid with an NES. Eight meta-games are on the roster, but two of these might not be playable for those averse to translation guides. I highly recommend this game for anyone with a DS and a little bit of patience.

Awesome: Ridiculously fun gameplay, homages to memorable games, great original games.

Not Awesome: Moderate language barrier, annoying commentary from Arino.
