Clay sculptures on box art can go horribly wrong, but Monster World IV pulls it off. The game was released only in Japan for the Sega Mega Drive in 1994. It was re-released on a PS2 Sega Ages compilation and an English version was released last year for XBLA and PSN.

Amazing Papercraft and So Can You!

We’ve seen people do amazing things with paper, but this tops them all. These unbelievable pieces from artist Destro2k look like they were pulled straight from the games.

The best part? Destro2k even added tutorials on how to make these awesome pieces. But be warned, they are hard. I couldn’t even make a Companion Cube.

THQ is Dead
For those of you who don’t know, THQ is dead. The company is bankrupt and bidding on the company’s properties for the most part has ended.
The company has left the following sad letter for its employees today. 



January 23, 2013
To All THQ Employees:
We now have the answers we’ve been seeking through our financial restructuring and Chapter 11 case. While much will be written, here are the facts of the bids and auction that occurred:
Yesterday morning, we received a competing bid for the operating business, along with Clearlake’s offer, and numerous offers for separate assets. During an auction process that lasted over 22 hours, the final conclusion was that the separate-asset bids would net more than a single buyer for the majority of the company. Shortly, we will, present the results to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which must concur with our assessment.
The proposed sales of multiple assets is as follows :
Sega agreed to purchase Relic
Koch Media agreed to purchase Volition and Metro
Crytek agreed to purchase Homefront
Take 2 agreed purchase Evolve and
Ubisoft agreed to purchase Montreal and South Park
We expect these sales to close this week.
Some assets, including our publishing businesses and Vigil, along with some other intellectual properties are not included in the sale agreements. They will remain part of the Chapter 11 case. We will make every effort to find appropriate buyers, if possible.
What this means for employees
We expect that most employees of the entities included in the sale will be offered employment by the new owners. However, we cannot say what these owners may intend, and there will likely be some positions that will not be needed under the new ownership. You should receive notice this week or early next week if the new owners intend to extend employment to you. Please note that the terms of your new employment, including pay and benefits, may be different from the current terms of your employment with THQ.
If you are an employee of an entity that is not included in the sale, we regret that your position will end. A small number of our headquarters staff will continue to be employed by THQ beyond January 25 to assist with the transition. THQ has sufficient resources to pay these employees for work going forward, and we will be contacting these employees immediately to ensure their continued employment during this transition period. We are requesting the ability to offer certain severance pay to minimize disruption for employees of non-included entities as they determine the next steps in their careers.
We know you will have many questions about this news. We’ll be meeting tomorrow when we return to talk through this announcement and to answer any questions you have. You will receive a benefits fact sheet and FAQs with answers to some questions that may be on your mind. Please review these materials closely.

Arcade Machine Hacked To Control RC Cars

Jet Set Radio HD: A Punk Rock Anthem In Video Game Form
When Jet Set Radio was originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 as Jet Grind Radio, it pushed the console to its technical limits, pioneered the cell-shaded look, and garnered itself cult classic status, but, twelve years later, does it still hold up?

Fusing street art, rollerblading, and youth culture with a fresh soundtrack and gang elements akin to The Warriors, Jet Set Radio has you collecting and playing as members of the GG’s, a scrappy rollberblading graffiti gang. Take on opposing gangs by covering their turf in your graffiti while avoiding the cops, S.W.A.T. teams, military tanks, rocket-launching helicopters, and deadly assassination hit squads who will do anything to silence your message of truth and rebellion as you uncover an evil corporation’s plot to take over the world.
AWESOME
An amazing soundtrack that still holds up after all these years. The songs are catchy as hell and prolonged exposure to Jet Set Radio may leave you with a few of these songs stuck in your head for weeks.
Aside from some blocky textures, the graphics are still gorgeous. The colorful neon-illuminated streets of Tokyo-to are unlike anything seen in a game since this game’s sequel, Jet Set Radio Future.
Like the original, this HD upgrade has a built-in graffiti editor that allows players to create their own tags. Definitely a rewarding distraction for the artistically inclined.
New additions like online leaderboards, bonus songs from Jet Set Radio Future, and a short documentary featuring interviews with director Masayoshi Kikuchi, art director Ryuta Ueda, composer Hideki Naganuma, and graffiti artist Eric Haze make this seem more like a fancy deluxe version of the game rather an a $10 downloadable HD re-release.
Over a decade since its release, Jet Set Radio still oozes with a distinct sense of hipness and style - an essence that games these days can rarely seem to capture.
NOT AWESOME
The controls are still janky as hell. This isn’t really noticeable on larger maps where it’s easier to land grinds and jump from rail to rail while spraying walls, but the smaller and more cluttered areas of the game can be tough to navigate - especially when trying to outrun enemies, chase down rival gang members, or trying to make your way to the roof of an adjacent building.
The objectives aren’t always 100% clear. The game starts you off in small, self-contained areas that eventually become connected as you progress. The only problem is, the game never really tells you that the areas become connected and neither does the map. This confusion easily could have been avoided with a new map system that shows the whole city instead of just the smaller areas.
While it’s now possible to control the camera with the second analogue stick (which wasn’t possible back in the day on the Dreamcast’s uni-sticked controller), the camera can still get stuck around right corners making it tough to see what’s coming up ahead.
Over ten years later and Jet Set Radio shines with a timelessly bleeding-edge cool factor that still holds up to this day and likely will for decades to come. Whether you missed out on this when it first came out back in the day or you’re a longtime fan looking to relive the magic, this downloadable upgrade of one of SEGA’s greatest definitely deserves a spot in every gamer’s digital storage space.

Albotas Review - Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA

I was expecting some light reading. But when my review copy of Service Games: The Rise and Fall of SEGA showed up on my doorstep, I found a text book. The nearly 400 page book details every step of Sega’s foray into the console industry, both in America and abroad. The amount of information in this book is staggering. And even though you know how Sega’s fate unfolds, you’re still rooting for them the entire time.

Border Break Gets iOS Treatment

Sega’s mech-based arcade game, Border Break, is getting an iOS version at some point according to Andriasang.com. You know when you know something probably sucks but you really want it anyway? That’s me and Border Break. I don’t know how Sega’s going to translate this game onto the iPad, but hopefully it works out. I’m not buying an iPad just for this, but I’ll definitely pick it up if I ever do get an iPad, just to fulfill my curiosity.

SEGA Heritage Collection Makes Old School New Again

SEGA’s Heritage Collection brings updated HD graphics to three classic Dreamcast Games: Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure 2, and Nights: Journey Into Dreams. Along with the HD facelift, each game will have bonus behind-the-scenes developer interviews which I’m personally more interested in.

The first game from the collection is Jet Set Radio which releases later this month, followed by Sonic Adventure 2 and Nights in October. All games will be available on both PSN and XBLA.

Echidnas Are Weird

I was watching a zoology show recently which featured weird creatures from Australia and New Guinea. One of those was the echidna, which you may know due to Knuckles from the Sonic series.

Echidnas are pretty weird. They, along with the platypus, are basically the evolutionary link between reptiles and mammals. They don’t regulate their body temperature well, they pee and poo at the same time and from the same hole, and females lay eggs instead of gestating internally. The male’s reproductive system is where it gets really weird, though. So weird that I had to put the picture after the break.
