A Little Bit on the First Footage of Saidaiohjou Side: Cave are location testing their latest and maybe last shoot ‘em up, DoDonPachi Saidaiohjou. Here’s the first footage of the game. I’m happy to see a traditional Cave shooter rather than something like Akai Katana.

A Little Bit on the OMG It’s a New Arcade Shmup Side: Just when you thought Cave was ready to - uh - cave, they announce that their mystery game, DoDonPachi Saidaiohjou is indeed a new arcade shooter. The game will be location tested in the near future and hit the arcades at some point later in the year. Hopefully there will be a 360 port, but I don’t think we’ll hear anything about that for several months at the least.

A Little Bit on the Mushihime-Sama Side: Today, Cave announced that they’re creating a high def update to their 2004 shooter. The game was previously ported from the arcade to the PS2, but not by Cave themselves. This is a must-buy for any Cave or shoot ‘em up fan. Hopefully it’s a full physical release rather than a download. A release date will be announced soon.
In other Mushi-flavored news, the Xbox 360 upgrade of the game’s sequel, Mushihime-Sama Futari, will hit Games on Demand next month.

A Little Bit on the iOS Side: So here it is: the trailer of Cave’s newest iOS shooter. If it looks familiar, that’s because it is. It’s a port of 2002’s DoDonPachi: Dai Ou Jou. The game is super challenging - I think I’ve only gotten to the fourth level boss - so you better buy insurance for your iThing before playing this and throwing your phone at the wall. It will be out next month.

A Little Bit on the Shmup Side: What’s this? A Cave shooter is getting a physical release in North America? Yep. Rising Star, who published a PAL version of DoDonPachi: Daifukkatsu are expanding to North America and their first gift to us is horizontal shooter, Akai Katana Shin. This is Cave’s weakest shmup in a while, so I’ll be more than happy to buy this release rather than the real deal Japanese version.

A Little Bit on the DoDonPachi Side: Cave, who may or may not be getting out of the arcade and console shmup scene, are teasing a (presumably) new entry into the DoDonPachi series of bullet hell shooters. I was under the impression that Daifukkatsu was supposed to be the final major entry into the series, but I could be totally making that up. So hopefully this is a sign that Cave isn’t actually dead to me.

A Little Bit on the Bad News Side: Shoot ‘em up fans, brace yourselves. Cave are allegedly shifting most of their development money away from the bullet hell genre and into “social games.” I’d imagine they mean games more like XBLA’s Nin-Nin Jump. Whatever it means, it translates to less shmups. And the pessimist in me is worried that it could mean no shmups at all. Cave are one of the best - if not the best - current game developers, in my opinion, so this is definitely a shame.

A Little Bit on the Skeevy Side: I recently fulfilled my destiny of buying a Japanese Xbox 360 Slim. They’re not being made anymore, so I figured now’s the time. Along with all the shmupy goodness that came with the console was a hilarious instruction manual featuring a skeevy Ron Burgandy style spokesman.

A Little Bit on the Insect Side: Cave have finally set a release date for the iOS port of Mushihimesama.  On Dec. 15 you can buy it for around $5. This is the original game from the series, not Futari, the sequel. So if you don’t want to spend $80 on the PS2 port, this might be a good compromise.

A Little Bit on the Warm Neck Side: It’s a shame that shipping charges from Cave’s official US store are ridiculous because they’ve got this Dai-Fukkatsu scarf just in time for bullet hell to freeze over into winter.

Import Review: Marchen Adventure Cotton 100%

Cotton is a cute ‘em up series created by Success and featuring a young broom-riding witch. The original game was released in arcades and was later ported to the PC Engine, Sharp X6800, and even the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Several years later, the game was tweaked and released for the Super Famicom with a new name: Marchen Adventure Cotton 100%. Hit the jump for our review.

The Crappy Part of Being a Collector
Under Defeat will be coming to XBLA and PSN in 2012, which is awesome news for you, but shitty news for me. The game was developed and released by G.Rev in 2005 for Sega’s NAOMI arcade board and soon ported to the Dreamcast. It’s one of the best-looking and -playing shooters of last generation. It never made it out of Japan, and even in Japan, it wasn’t a common find.
I accidentally became a rare games collector a few years ago. A favorite of my import Dreamcast collection is the Sega Direct version of Under Defeat. It goes for a lot of money and is not easy to find. Now that game is going to drastically depreciate in value, just like other rare rereleased games before it. Both the value and the exclusivity of the game have vanished. Plus, from what I hear, if Under Defeat does well on XBLA and PSN, G.Rev may rerelease Border Down, my favorite Dreamcast game, one of my favorite games in general, and the crown jewel of my collection (limited edition, of course). It’s great that these games are getting the recognition they deserve, but at the same time it really stings to have publishers say “fuck you” to the collectors, a lot of whom supported them when no one else did.

iPhone 4 Cave Case
Now I really want an iPhone. This Cave case is awesome. It’s nice and subtle and doesn’t say, “Hey! I analyze bullet patterns in video games when I get home from work,” but also proclaims your masochistic love for shooters to those in the know. Get it for about $35 before shipping at the international Cave store.

Cave to Shmup the Vita
Cave are finally back on the Sony wagon. According to Andriasang.com, the company infamous for super hard bullet hell shooters will be bringing an original shmup to the Vita. There are zero details about the game right now, but if I were a betting man, I’d say the game will use the touch surface on the back of the Vita. Cave have been going bonkers over the iPad for a few years now between ports of their 360 ports [meta!] and even some original games spun off of their series like Mushihime-sama. They love that touchy feely stuff. In other news, I just turned “shmup” into a verb.

Region Free Cave Release on the Way
We non-Japanese got burned when Cave region-locked DoDonPachi: Dai Fukatsu. But it seems like they had a way-too-late change of heart. In November, Europeans will be able to buy a kind-of-region-free and enhanced version of the game, according to Rising Star. Named DoDonPachi Resurrection Delux, this version will feature a handful of extras and a soundtrack. The Black Label and 1.51 versions of the game will be available as DLC.
The best part of the news for us Americans is that the game will play perfectly fine in a US 360. It will not work on Japanese consoles though. I’ve still got the original version sealed, sitting on my shelf. I’m sure I’ll get a Japanese 360 sooner or later. But in the meantime, this version is pretty tempting.
