Monday Morning Box Art
Monday mornings suck. So here’s some box art to make it better. We’re going to start off this weekly post with one of my favorite box arts of all time - MUSHA Aleste, a Japan-only Genesis shoot ‘em up made by Compile and Toaplan.

It’s the End of Cave as We Know It
Cave have been making top tier shoot ‘em ups since 1994’s DonPachi. They only had one more year to go before they could claim their 20th shmupaversary. But today the Japanese game developer announced that they will be focusing solely on social games from now on. DoDonPachi: SaiDaiOuJou will be their final shooter. I feel like a little piece of me died today.
Update: Some say that the demise of Cave was grossly exaggerated due to translation issues and that Cave have not announced any sort of restructuring. I totally believe that. However, Makoto Asada, the Head of Game Development, has announced that he is leaving the company. Without Asada, there’s no Cave, in my opinion. So, the above article is still pretty much valid.

Pre-Orders are up for DoDonPachi: Saidaioujou
Get ready to be obliterated over and over again. Cave’s (presumably) final Xbox 360 port will be released on May 30. Play-Asia are currently taking pre-orders, with a shipped total of under $80. That’s for the regular edition at least. There’s also a limited edition and and super limited edition. I was able to 1CC DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu after a month or so of practice. Hopefully I can pull off a 1CC on this one.
Warning: This is an import. It hasn’t been confirmed to work on non-Japanese 360s.

Shoot ‘em ups, shmups, shooters, STGs - call them what you want. They’re undeniably one of the most enduring yet progressive game genres around. From Space Invaders, the game that kicked off Japan’s arcade craze, to DoDonPachi Saidaioujou, Cave’s latest release, shooters have kept our index fingers pounding on the Shot button and our middle fingers precariously hovering over the Bomb button. Hit the link for a list of our favorite shoot ‘em ups.

DoDonPachi: SaiDaiouJou 360 Confirmed for May 30 Release
What will likely be Cave’s final release for Xbox 360 will launch on May 30 according to the famous shoot ‘em up developer. The arcade version of the bullet hell game was released last year. This is presumably the final game in the DoDonPachi series, which started with DonPachi back in 1995, and is the followup to the very awesome DoDonPachi: DaiFukKatsu. The Japanese version will likely be region-locked, but Rising Star Games have been localizing recent Cave shooters like DaiFukKatsu and Akai Katana.

Raiden Bundle Coming to iOS
DotEmu, the company that brought us a meh iOS port of the Neo Geo’s Blazing Star will be releasing a collection of Raiden games this fall. The bundle will include Raiden, Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters 2, and Raiden Fighters Jet. If you don’t have an Xbox 360 - and if DotEmu doesn’t mangle the controls like they did with Blazing Star - this is an awesome release. If you do have a 360, pick up Raiden Fighters Aces, which contains all of the above except for the original Raiden game.

Under Defeat HD PS3 Version Coming to US
Rising Star Games recently announced that they will be brining G.rev’s excellent shooter, Under Defeat, to the US as well as publishing the previously announced European version. The Xbox 360 version of the game will not be coming out in America.
It’s cool that the game is finally being published in one way or another in the US, but it’s worth noting the the Japanese PS3 release was region-free to begin with. I’d also like to point out that the US version is getting both a PSN and boxed retail version. (Some sites have claimed only a PSN version will be released.)

DoDonPachi Saidaioujou Confirmed for Xbox 360
Phew! I was worried that Mushihime-sama HD would be Cave’s last 360 game, but early this morning they announced that the latest game in their DoDonPachi series will be getting a home version. The arcade port with spiced up visuals and several extra features will be out next Spring. No word on region-lockout but it’s not likely this one will be region-free.

Under Defeat HD Possibly Coming to the US
Rising Star Games, the publisher that brought us the localized Akai Katana, have announced that they will be releasing G.Rev’s Under Defeat HD for Xbox 360 and PS3. What’s less clear is whether this will only be released in Europe (RSG’s homeland) or if it will make it across the pond. If it is only released in Europe, there may be hope for a region-free release as Rising Star did with DoDonPachi: DaiFukkatsu for Xbox 360.
We’ve reached out to Rising Star Games for clarification.

Upcoming 360 Shmup: Ginga Force

Qute, the makers of Eschatos, a pretty darn cool Xbox 360 shoot ‘em up, have shared screen shots of their new shmup, Ginga Force. Judging by the screens, it looks like this might be a mix between 2D and 3D play styles, which makes me skeptical. At the same time, I’m interested because the character design looks like it’s inspired by that of Radiant Silvergun. Plus the ship totally looks like the one from ThunderForce V.

Cave Report: Akai Katana out May 16, Japanese Budget Version on June 14
The North American version of Cave’s most recent 360 port will be available on May 16, courtesy of Rising Star Games and Aksys. Akai Katana is Cave’s only horizontal shooter other than Progear no Arashi. At $40, it’s a steal. But now I’ve got a dilemma. There’s no way I’m paying the $75+ for the original Japanese release. But on June 14, the “Cave the Best” budget version is being released for the same price. Do I pay $40 for an American version or do I pay $40 (plus shipping) for the Japanese budget version? Where’s my Magic 8 Ball?

Cave Report: Mushihimesama Futari Hits iOS on April 5

An iOS port of Mushihimesama Futari [AKA Bug Princess 2] will be available on April 5 for $5. That’s less than a week away. If you dig it, buy the 360 port [it’s originally an arcade game]. The 360 version is region free and will ring in at less than $40 shipped since it’s been given the Platinum Collection treatment. Futari is one of only three games I gave a perfect score back when I wrote for TheBBPS (Border Down and Bayonetta being the others). Seriously - buy this game.

A Little Bit on the Mushihime-Sama Side: So we’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Mushihime-Sama HD will be out on May 24. The bad news is that the standard edition will cost nearly $90 and the special edition (which includes alternate cover art and a soundtrack) will cost over $110. And that’s before import shops like Play-Asia jack up the prices. Is that going to stop me from buying it? Hell no.

A Little Bit on the First Footage of Saidaiohjou Side: Cave are location testing their latest and maybe last shoot ‘em up, DoDonPachi Saidaiohjou. Here’s the first footage of the game. I’m happy to see a traditional Cave shooter rather than something like Akai Katana.
