Toy Hunting At NYCC 2012

NYCC 2012 was glorious. I was able to control myself and bought less than ten toys. But I took pictures of a bunch of the toys that I wish I got. Hit the jump to check out just a few of the cool designer toys we spotted at NYCC.

A Little Bit On The Custom Toy Side: Custom “Comic Stripped” Calvin & Hobbes 16” Qee by ViseOne.

From the artist:

For decades now I’m reading Bill Watterson’s CALVIN & HOBBES and ofcourse I had to come up with a Comic Stripped version for my favorite comicstrip.
I decided to cover a 16” Qee with black and white copies on white and orange paper - so no original comicbook was harmed!

I added loose brushstrokes to adapt the style of Watterson - I know I will never pay justice to the great Watterson but I tried to capture this style anyway.

Didn’t decide yet if this piece is for sale - but offers start at € 650,- including shipping. If someone is interested he/she can contact me and we’ll see…

Daily Geekstomization: 8” Game Boy Color Qee Mods by Romany WG.
These were made way back in 2006. They blew my mind then, and they blow my mind now. Very Daft Punk-ish. The only bummer is that they don’t actually function as GBC’s, but that didn’t stop the artist from selling them each for $300.
From the artist:

Gameboy Qee was an idea from my 12 year old son. It’s amazing, if you google ‘Gameboy qee’ how many results come up. Seems to been discussed all over the world and especially Japan. Most people were surprised and confused as to why it wouldn’t work.

Glowing 7” Domo-Kun by Dark Horse x Toy2R
Even though I love Domo-Kun, I don’t like most of the Qees or flocked figures. But this glowing-in-the-dark 7” has got me reaching for my wallet. Get ‘em while you can; Kidrobot says they’re “super limited.”

Toy2R is dropping an all new line of 5” Mini Qee figures this February and they’re already looking pretty off-the-chain. It’ll be nice to see what artists do with these things, but it’ll be even nicer to see something other than Munnys and Dunnys dominating the custom scene.

This new series will make its debut at Yoyamart in NYC (during Toyfair!) at 7pm on February 14th with a bunch of customs by some truly talented artist. Check out Toy2R on Facebook page for more sneak peeks and teasers of the customs.
